The 2016 NFL season is right around the corner which means another year of fantasy football is upon us as well, and a google search about fantasy content yields countless hits of writers and analysts offering their opinions on preseason projections, draft strategies, and the like. Being the fantasy football buff that I am, I figured I'd add my two cents, picking a few commonly projective categories and selecting five players who I believe will fit into that category this season.
Of course, it's fantasy football, and nobody knows for certain what will happen. This is all speculation and for all we know, it could all be completely moot in a few weeks. Here are my top five breakout candidates:
1. Amari Cooper
The 2015 fourth overall pick quietly put together a solid rookie campaign with just over 1000 yards and six touchdowns. Consistency was a bit of an issue and he dealt with a few cases of the drops over the year, but that's to be expected when it comes to rookie growing pains. I think the Raiders will be a trending team this year and Derek Carr is one of the league's best young quarterbacks. When you throw all that together and consider Cooper will be the top receiving threat in that offense, there's some real potential for a breakout year for him this season.
2. Brandin Cooks
I might be a year late on this one as Cooks had over 1100 yards and nine touchdowns last season. but with one of the best quarterbacks in the game in Drew Brees delivering him the ball, there's still room to grow as he continues to assert himself as a true number one receiver in the Big Easy.
3. Jameis Winston
Wasn't a big fan of his antics while he was in college, but it looks as if he's really matured and grown into the future franchise quarterback the Bucs wanted when they picked him with the first overall pick last season. The Bucs had a top five offense last year with Doug Martin, and the heights of the weapons they've been gathering for Winston have rivaled those of a basketball team. He even went to the Pro Bowl as a rookie, albeit as a replacement, but I still expect his game to jump in year two.
4. Matt Jones
He showed flashes last year and comes into the year as the unquestioned starter with Alfred Morris gone. Kirk Cousins is also on the rise which should help the offense improve from an overall perspective. You like that, Washington?
5. Travis Kelce
This guy is one of the most talented tight ends in the league, but they just can't seem to get his usage right in Kansas City. When utilized, he's a matchup nightmare and simply just a physical specimen like Rob Gronkowski. His numbers have been there when he's involved, and if they can figure out how to get the most out of him in that offense, look out.
