Merry Christmas!

This is going to similar to something that I will be mailing out to some of you in not too long as a Christmas/change or residency card (plus that one will include a picture of me and the dogs taken by action farm photographer Lisa).

The holiday season of 2016 and the end of this year is a time of big changes for me. As of December 20th, my time at the University of Jamestown will come to an end. In May I will return for graduation ceremonies on Saturday the 6th where I will receive my degree in History with minors in Political Science and Coaching. Yes, this break in springs work has been approved by the boss, don’t worry.

Anyway as of December 20th I will move back home to the farm. My parents are in the process of making the permanent move to their lake home just 15 minutes or so from the farm. Essentially, all I have to do is change bedrooms, so I got extremely likely there. It’s exciting, it’s a little nerve wracking, but I am as ready for it now as I ever will be.

All the work I have done in my life to this point has been on the farm. So I will basically continue to do what I have done over the summers and weekends for the last several years, except I will do it all year round. When you think of it that way, it makes sense why I thought of this final semester of college as a sort of vacation.

My hobby that I have taken on starting almost immediately upon moving home is coaching basketball in Garrison. I will be the head junior high basketball coach starting in early January and will also do a little bit of helping with the high school team. I realize that this experience will be challenging in some ways, but I am sure I will enjoy it. Coaching basketball is something that I have always wanted to do, so I am very excited for my first opportunity, especially in my hometown. I will also be the head legion baseball coach again (for the second year) next summer for the Titans.

I did not get married or have any children this year so I do not have much else worth noting. Both of those things are also very much so longshots for next year so I would not hold my breathe if I was you. Anyway, I am very excited for all of my opportunities at home on the farm and ranch, with coaching and lots of nearby family for fun on the side. I am healthy, I have more than I need, and there is not much more I could ask for in this world.

I wish everyone a great 2017 and a very Merry Christmas!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
