Movies are art. Of course, there are good and bad movies; in the same way, there are good and bad books, paintings and sculptures. Knowing about the cinema makes you more interesting. If you want to impress somebody in a conversation (for personal or professional reasons), it is important to have some knowledge about classic films.

Don't be scared. Classic movies are the best. Yes, they do not have a lot of special effects, or they are slower than our current movies, but classic films have great dialogs, immortal scenes, unique actors and historic directors. I hardly recommend you watch my six suggestions of classic movies; you will enjoy them, and you will look smart in any conversation.

1. “Ben-Hur.”

"Ben-Hur" (1959) is the first movie which won eleven "Academic Awards;" it took forty years to have another movie with the same number of Oscars. I like this movie a lot because it is amazing, and because it was one of my grandfather's favorites. "Ben-Hur" has everything: Charlton Heston, Rome Empire, revenge, betrayal and Jesus Christ. It is a little bit longer, but it's worth it. Actually, when you see this mega production, and you realize it was made in 1959, you can understand the high standards the producers had.

2. “Citizen Kane.”

I know you have had at least one conversation where "Citizen Kane" (1941) came up. It is a complex drama where a strong character, Charles Foster Kane (Orson Wells), has everything, but who is also missing something unique, something that no money in the world can buy. Even though it has a cute ending, what I like the most in this movie is Kane's journey, his ideas, his way to face the world and his ideas about journalism.

3. “Psycho.”

"Psycho" (1960) is an Alfred Hitchcock's film, and one of the most important horror movies in history. The shower scene is iconic and unforgivable. I can say you will be stuck to the TV because this movie is amazing. There are three or four other sequels, but they are really bad. However, the TV show "Bates Motel" is highly recommended. The producers of "Bates Motel" were big fans of "Psycho," and they created a great show.

If you don't want to watch "Psycho," you can try another Hitchcock film. I am a big fan of his work; you choose any of his movies, and you will enjoy a great piece of art.

4. “A Clockwork Orange.”

"A Clockwork Orange" (1971) is a piece of art. Stanley Kubrick created this futurist film which is timeless. You can watch this movie today or in ten years; I assure you it will make you think about our society, our world and our real future. As I said about Hitchcock, if you don't want to watch "A Clockwork Orange," you can pick another Kubrick's movies because he has some of the most amazing films and all of them are timeless; it is never too late to enjoy Kubrick.

5. "To Kill a Mockingbird."

"To Kill a Mockingbird" (1962) is an excellent adaptation of Harper Lee's novel. If you enjoyed the book, you will love the movie. Gregory Peck plays a stunning Atticus (he got the Academy Award as Lead Actor for this role); the whole background, kids' performance and the script are perfect. If you have not read the book yet (You must start reading it now), you can watch the movie to have at least an idea about why "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a piece of magic.

6. “Casablanca.”

My last movie is "Casablanca" (1942). I know it sounds cliché, but this movie is the mother of the classic movies. Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman, two icons of classic Hollywood, performance one of the most famous love stories. "Casablanca" could be a little bit slow, but it deserves to be watched. After you enjoy the movie, finally you can understand these phrases: "We'll always have Paris;" "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship;" "Play it, Sam. Play "As Time Goes By;" "You played it for her, you can play it for me!... If she can stand it, I can! Play it!"

Classic movies are part of history and of art; don't lose the chance to enjoy good movies and make yourself more educated. Go and watch these six classics.

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Because no one ever really leaves.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
