Must-See Television

We all know one person who is always saying "this reminds me of that one episode of Seinfeld when ..." and what more can you do than smile and nod when you've never even seen a second of that show.

There are certain shows that people will be referencing for the next 100 plus years. It is important to keep up with pop culture but also to have a general knowledge of the classic shows. Even though media and culture is constantly evolving, the humor, the love stories, and the dramatic story lines are timeless.

Here is a list of shows that can help you become well-versed in the world of television.

1. "Friends"

This one is a must see. "Friends" has every single awkward, romantic, rebound, and weird relationship imaginable in its 10 seasons. Lucky for you, all of the episodes are on Netflix. Now you have a new show to binge watch while you ignore all of your responsibilities!!!

2. "Seinfeld"

Like "Friends," this is a classic. It's the show you always hear the older men and women referencing. It was on television at the same time as "Friends," and together, they dominated the ratings. I haven't seen all of the episodes but I always watch it when it's on TV. All of the episodes are now on Hulu, so go start a two week free trial and binge watch!

3. "Gossip Girl"

"One Tree Hill" and "90210" are also acceptable to be able to check this one off your list. I loved "Gossip Girl" because I would fantasize about living life like a Waldorf or a Van Der Woodsen. I also loved watching the unbreakable bond between Blair and Serena (they literally stuck together through everything). Oh, and of course there is Chuck Bass, need I say more?

4. "The Office"/"Parks and Recreation"

These two are gems. They are both set in an office in a small suburban town and they are both hysterical. To be honest, both of these shows had a rough first season but once the writers and actors figured out their characters, the laughter was non stop. There have been times when I've had to pause it because I couldn't stop laughing. I've also cried during both of these shows because there have been emotional moments (like when Michael Scott left Dunder Mifflin or when Ben proposed to Leslie). Both shows are on Netflix so get cracking!

5. "The West Wing"

I've never actually watched this show but I've never heard a negative review. Whenever I bring up "Scandal," or "House of Cards," people ask me if I've seen "The West Wing," and tell me to watch it, so it's definitely in my Netflix queue. Even though these shows are fictional, you still learn a great deal about certain policies and scandals that went on in the past (they base a lot off of real situations).

6. "Sex and the City"

This is another show I haven't watched, but plan to. Many say that it paved the way for modern shows with a female as the lead, whether it be a comedy or a drama. It's another "Gossip Girl" type of show because you fantasize about living a life of opulence.

7. "Freaks and Geeks"

This is probably the only one-season show that is relevant. It is such a shame that NBC executive, Garth Ancier, decided to cancel the show because of low ratings from the first 12 episodes. Seth Rogen is still bitter about his decision and he encountered Ancier at a rehearsal for SNL 40 last year (read about it here). Even if it's only for 18 episodes, it's hard not to love young James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segel.

Some other great shows are "30 Rock," "Taxi," "How I Met Your Mother," "The Blacklist," "Skins (UK)," and "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia."

I'm not saying that you should go home and binge watch every single one of the shows listed above, but maybe don't change the channel next time an episode of "Taxi" comes on TV.

Happy watching!

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
