Over the past year, I have had a deep desire within me to get involved in issues revolving around social action campaigns. Just recently, a friend of mine told me all about her job position to inform local Boston residents about the crisis that is threatening the local bee population. Because of pollution and corporate greed in Boston, the bee community is at risk of eventually becoming extinct.
Environment Massachusetts explains how the declining bee population affects our food supply. Whether we are fond of bees or not, they are essential to our life on Earth and the planet would drastically change without them.
Bees are incredibly important to our Boston community specifically because we rely on bees to pollinate 71 of the 100 crops that provide 90% of most of the worlds food, according to Environment Massachusetts. Scientists have in fact pointed out several causes to the decline in the bee population over the recent years. Some of these causes include global warming, habitat loss, parasites, and a class of bee-killing insecticides known as neonics. Because Boston is a huge city known for its industrial corporations, it is clear that Boston has a serious problem dealing with the chemicals put into the environment by these corporations.
If you want to make an impact on the Boston community but are not sure which campaigns to actually get involved in, I urge you to support Environment Massachusetts in their public awareness campaign to save the bees. Environment Massachusetts currently has a huge fight in the upcoming years against several agrichemical companies who have the money and resources to pay lobbyists to reach out to politicians and pass legislation benefiting their own wallets. I will be doing my part by actually working at Environment Massachusetts to raise awareness about and funds to prevent this bee epidemic from continuing any further.
