Current events have once again stirred up this obnoxious term. I have seen so many complaints regarding "white privilege." Well, if you want to be that way, one could easily come up with a reason that any given race is "privileged" in their own way. But I try not to think that way. Someone gets an award because of their hard work, not their skin color. Someone gets a job promotion because of their qualifications, not their skin color. People get arrested because of their actions, not their skin color. So, why are we so obsessed with race? Not all black people are bad, not all Asian people are geniuses, and not all white people are racists.
Majority race Americans avoid black history?
I don't know what school y'all went to, but I learned a lot about important people that were not white. Growing up, these people were just people with amazing accomplishments. I though nothing of their skin color. It did not surprise me that they achieved these accomplishments. They are all well known for good reasons. Harriet Tubman, Rosa Parks, Martin Luther King Jr., Jackie Robinson -- these people earned their spot in history right next to all the other historical figures of any other skin color, and are worth admiring. Who cares what race they are? I guess learning about them was just part of my white privilege. I understand the sentiment behind calling it Black history" but why can't we just call it all history?
Acknowledgment of any kind of race now just undermines how far we have come as humans. We are all the same. Your actions are what gets your character judged. Perhaps there are still a few who judge someone strictly based off their skin, but that is not the majority. African-Americans have asked for a long time not to be judged by their skin color. But, now, I am being judged for mine.
Authority figures share the same skin tone as whites?
What?
Everyone complained about there never having been an African-American President. Well here is now and all I hear and read is, "Yeah, but he's the only one." Once again, down-playing an accomplishment to seem the victimized race. Must be Mr. Obama's half-white privilege that got him the job as President.
Former Secretary of State and former National Security Advisor, Condoleezza Rice. Highly educated, extremely successful career woman, and proud woman of color.
Cops hate black people?
There are many African-American police officers who try their best to keep people safe. I read an interview with a Georgia State Trooper where an African-American man questioned an Hispanic police officer. The State Trooper talked with the man and explained that he did not think all black people are bad. He stated "However, some of the most aggressive people I have come across have happened to be black." People are so quick to damn cops for poorly thought-out actions. But if someone is threatening your life or the life of another, you have to think quickly. That can't be easy. The majority of our service men are not going to act out of hatred, but out of fear. Aggressive actions are going to be reciprocated, its human nature.
I know I am going to get pinned as a racist. I am white, after all; it's going to happen anyway. But I just wish people would stop looking for excuses to be victims. Whites are bad because their ancestors were slave owners, even if some of those white people will disagree with racism, slavery and stereotyping until they die.
"You are white... You are privileged... You are a racist... You laugh when someone of color dies... You expect to get your way because of your skin color... You are evil."
White people are not the only ones capable of racism and hatred.
