You and your parents most likely have completely different definitions and examples of “good music” and it is important to explore both sides of the argument. Both generations of music lovers don’t realize how connected they are. Bands and artists of today are heavily influenced by music of the past and that should be embraced! So, the next time your parents are in charge of the music don't fret, they've probably got some cool tunes up their sleeves.
Crosby, Stills, Nash, & Young
Although Young isn’t always present, CSNY were super influential in the world of 70’s music. Imitated beyond belief, but never duplicated. Each of the guys came from success before forming ‘rock’s first supergroup.’ Playing to over half a million people at Woodstock and releasing hit after hit, you owe it to your parents to just give them a listen.
Simon & Garfunkel
We all know Mrs. Robinson, but do you know the tens of other Simon & Garfunkel hits? Simon & Garfunkel are a folk-rock pop(ish) duo who were one of the most popular acts of the 1960s. Getting signed by a studio at 15, they started very young singing songs of love, fighting, growing up and heartbreak. Your parents probably feel very nostalgic listening to them, and you should be able to partake.
Joni Mitchell
Dubbed by Rolling Stone Magazine as one of the best songwriters ever, Joni Mitchell is one of the most recognized female artists of our (both parents and kids!) time. She explores the topics of love and confusion and traveling and politics and environmental concerns. You definitely know her song “Big Yellow Taxi” but there is so much more than that.
Smokey Robinson and The Miracles
Yet another supergroup in the mix, Smokey Robinson and The Miracles were referred to as “Motown’s Supergroup.” Heavily influencing the rock, R&B, and pop genres, they took the country and world by storm, having 26 top 40 pop hits.
David Bowie
David Bowie is a major figurehead in the evolution of popular music. His music and the way he presented himself were influential beyond belief. David Bowie will bring back some crazy memories to your parents, I’m sure of it.
As you can see, your parent's music is nothing to dread! The artists they listened to most likely influenced some of your favorites, so don't be afraid the next time you get in the car and your dad is in charge of the radio.
