It's time for another music review! This week I'm going to put a spotlight on the biggest a capella group in the world right now - Pentatonix.
Pentatonix is made up of members Scott Hoying, Mitch Grassi, Kirstie Maldanado, Avi Kaplan, and Kevin Olusola. Scott, Mitch, and Kirstie all attended the same High School in Arlington, TX. After they graduated, they decided to audition for a hit a capella TV show called "The Sing Off." The minimum group size for the show was five members, so they began the hunt for a bass singer and a killer beat-boxer. Enter Avi and Kevin.
They were selected for Season 3 of "The Sing Off" and ended up winning. After becoming the Season 3 champions, they kind of fell off the map. They were posting videos on YouTube every week in an effort to keep their music out there, but the record deal from The Sing Off wasn't one that was very productive to them. Their videos on YouTube went so viral that RCA records ended up offering them a contract.
Now, 7 albums later, Pentatonix is the biggest a capella group in the world. They have dominated the charts with covers and original music. They have just released their third Christmas album, titled "A Pentatonix Christmas." For the last several days, their Christmas music is all I've been able to listen to.
Just about everybody has heard at least one song by Pentatnoix, but if you haven't, you definitely need to check out their YouTube page! My obsession from them right now is their cover of "Hallelujah." It's just amazing!
That's all for this week's music review!
