This past week I was invited to Revolution Bar on Long Island to see a few Post Hardcore bands rock the stage.
Now, as a crazed, sleep deprived grad student, any opportunity to blow off some steam sounds like a great plan to me. Additionally, considering my night started with me tripping and falling, face first into a puddle, a heavy set and a fun crowd was just what I needed, and I was not disappointed.
With a crowd that clearly adored them, U Blue took the stage last, headliners of a show compiled of six bands, including Dyne Side and Voices in Vain.
Now if you don't know Post Hardcore Music, let me just help you out a bit. Post Hardcore music branched off of the Punk Rock Genre. Music in this scene maintains that awesome intensity and aggression that gives Hardcore Punk music its heart and soul, but they also have an awesome emphasis on creativity and expression that gives the music a different sound and feeling.
U Blue did an awesome job of keeping the crowd engaged throughout the entire show. They are a high energy, band with a great sound.. One of the most appealing things about their sound is the way they effortlessly switch between a melodic instrumental vibe to that of high energy aggression with tons of emotion.
Now, personally, I am a sucker for a band that clearly loves their fans. Seeing the interaction between them and their fans throughout their set was a clear highlight for me. They never stopped interacting with the crowd from the start of their set to the end of it, and that is something extremely respectable for a band to do. It is clear that their fans enjoyment is a priority for them.
Now, in any given show, I can imagine with a group like this, spontaneous decision and impulse it what drives every decision on stage. This show in particular had two band members who were celebrating birthdays, along with a member of the audience. So naturally in a situation such as this, a rendition of Happy Birthday would need to be sung, and it was, fabulously. In addition to this spontaneous song, a cake magically appeared as the lead singer, Sean Ragoobir, smashed it right into the guitarist, Conor Daly's face, in the middle of a riff none the less.
But hey, the kid rolled with the punches and played the rest of the set, covered in cake, acting as a snack supplier to anyone in need.
...I am kidding about that last part... he was primarily a snack supplier to Sean....
So, if you are looking for a new up and coming band to check out, I highly suggest U Blue, and for suggestions, check out their newest single, Gold Codes. It's got a great instrumental background that counters between melodic rock and a harder vibe effortlessly, keeping the listener engaged, if you have the opportunity to see them live, I highly recommend you take it.
You can listen to them on Youtube or Spotify.
