I Truly Listened To My Friend's Spotify And Learned A Lot About Her

Music is a door to the soul.

My friend has one of my all-time favorite playlists, but I never truly listened to what the music was conveying. I knew every word to every song, yet I didn't comprehend the meaning behind the lyrics. Why did she choose this song? What am I supposed to feel while listening to this? I decided to take two hours and truly embrace the songs; I learned a lot about, not only the songs but also my friend.

The first thing I noticed is that a lot of the music is an alternative/EDM hybrid which is a bit of a change from my typical contemporary R&B playlist. The songs aren't extremely zen nor are they hardcore pumping up music, they are a balanced middle ground. This helped me realize that this is a perfect representation of my friend; she is a very level-headed person.

Her personality isn't too strong nor is it dull, she's balanced.

After I got past the vibe of the music, I began to delve into the lyrics' meaning. The words I was hearing were not angry nor were they meaningless cuss words. Every single word contributed to a bigger storyline than I initially realized. My friend isn't someone who embraces anger nor does she say things without meaning which is reflected in her well thought out playlist.

Although the songs did vary in lyrics, the common theme is striving for love. There are numerous songs that portray the story of someone looking for love or the loss of that love. I realized that this theme is not only something she yearns for but also what every human is in search of. She just uses music as her outlet.

I know that it doesn't sound like much, but I became more aware of how my friend thinks. I already knew stories of her past, the tribulations of her present, and her aspirations for her future, but now I know how her soul feels.

Music truly is a window to the soul. The tempo can tell you how their personality is, the lyrics are reflective of their own tongue, and the storyline often reveals unknown journeys. This playlist is a direct look into her life and I'm so grateful that she was brave enough to allow me to take a peek.

Writing a paper is never fun and is rarely rewarding. The writer's block, the page requirement, be specific, but don’t summarize, make sure you fixed any grammatical errors, did you even use spellcheck? and analyze, analyze, analyze.

Papers can be a major pain. They take up so much time and effort that by the end of the process you hate yourself and you hate the professor for making life so difficult. Questions of your existence start roaming in your mind. Am I even cut out for college if I can’t write a single paper? Am I even capable of taking care of myself if I lack the energy to open my laptop and start typing?

I can barely remember back when I was the only child. Most would say it’s because it is extremely difficult to remember things as a toddler but I would say it's because I was bored until my sister came along. My mother always says how important the "sister bond" is and with every year that passes I realize how right she is. Instead of writing a novel about all of the wonderful things there are about having a sister I decided to list a few of them instead.

It is the time of our lives that we are beginning to enter the adult world and most of us, if not all of us, have no idea what we are doing. It's like starting a video game, but skipping the tutorial. We're all just running around aimlessly hoping we accidentally do something right that moves us along the right path. Now that graduation has just happened, or is right around the corner for some of us, it's time to start thinking about how we are going to take care of ourselves once we are on our own.
