For those of you who don't know, BEING A MUSIC MAJOR IS STRESSFUL AS CRAP, but so far I've learned it's totally worth it. This list helps describe the life of us music majors and all that we endure. If you're thinking about majoring in music, please do so, and let this be a lesson that prepares you for what's next. If you're already pursuing this major, you'll relate to this perfectly and hopefully get a good laugh out of it.
YOU KNOW YOU'RE A MUSIC MAJOR WHEN....
1. You're both an early bird and a late nighter.
Having to wake up early and stay up super late means lack of beauty sleep among many musicians.
2. You live and breathe in the music building everyday.
Most musicians typically spend more time in the music building than any other classroom at school. Heck, most musicians spend more time in the music building than their own home!
3. You get angry that other people can't clap on beat.
When there's a song playing anywhere and non music people clap too late or too soon and the beat turns into a sea of claps. The sea of claps then turns into a sea of frustration.
4. Your only friends are in (band, orchestra, choir etc.) with you.
You know absolutely no one else outside the realm of the music building. Your friends are your music mates, and that's just what you have become accustomed to.
5. Taking a nap anywhere has become a skill.
Couches, buses, floors, you name it, we've slept there. No matter where we are, once we get comfortable, bam, lights out.
6. The practice rooms are your secondary home.
You practice so often you find yourself spending more time in the practice room than your own bedroom.
7. You have a metronome and tuner app on your phone.
Having this app is handy so you don't have to carry around anything extra. Every tempo and pitch is contained in the palm of your hand.
8. Anything that is ever out of tune makes your arm hairs stand up and scream bloody murder.
Our ears have been trained to hear only perfect pitches, anything other than that is a complete disgrace. Once you go flat, you can never go back.
9. (If you march) you get the most awkward tan lines.
What're swimsuit tan lines? We'd never know. Let us show you our famous shirt and sock tan lines that we have worked oh so hard for. They never go away either.
10. You're having the best time of your life.
This long road brings us to a happy ending. Without music we are nothing, this is true.
