A Letter To The Music That Always Finds The Beauty In Banality
Brianna Parkinson

Hey music of my life,

Thank you. Thank you for allowing me to keep my cool when I am stressing for exams. I’m lookin’ at you, Ben Howard. And, thank you Zeppelin for blessing me with "Kashmir" every time I need a quick pump up confidence jam before that exam. I can’t forget about my pals, Sly & The Family Stone and Otis Redding for making my morning bright every time I walk to class in this brittle cold weather. You make my soul warm. So do you, Jimi Hendrix, Eagles, Lynyrd Skynyrd and Alabama Shakes. Oh, and thanks for never judging me when I jam out in my room on air guitar to your songs when no one’s watching.

Most of all, thank you for transforming every chord into a specific time and place in my life. I hear Sinatra and I can see my Grandma Lou singing “This Love of Mine” in front of me. I can almost see the experiences she has had with that song in the vibratos of her voice as she sings it. And you, Van Morrison, I listen to “Brown Eyed Girl” and I picture my whole family in my living room, sitting in a circle singing it while my Uncle plays it on his acoustic. Billy Joel, thank you for filling my mind with thoughts of me and dad on long car rides playing “The Stranger” album on repeat and never hesitating to sing all the words at the top of our lungs. And last, but never least, thank you Don McLean for your “American Pie” that graced my life with your seven minute song every time I drove in my Grandma’s Buick Century. And thank you for letting me share a moment with my mom and brother, holding each other, crying and singing this song the night my grandma passed away.

Not only do you bring memories to from my past to my thoughts, you also help me remember where I come from--specifically you Bon Jovi and Bruce Springsteen. Every time I hear Jon Bon I remember dancing and singing “Always” in aisles in the rain at Metlife Stadium with my sister and two, equally Bon Jovi crazed, middle-aged strangers. And you Bruce Springsteen, there’s nothing better than spending a beach day at the Jersey Shore with you playing in the background. You have to admit it, Jersey peeps, you’ve done it before too.

Lastly, to the music that I listen to, thank you for turning every banality of life into a beautiful thing. I could look at an abandoned building with cracks in windows and holes in the foundations and it would be breathtaking with music in the background. I could be in the worst mood since Nam and you could turn my day upside down. So, thank you for being a blessing in my life and for reminding me of the things in my life that I never want to forget.

Love, Bri

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
