When I made my first-ever bucket list, one of the first things I wrote was "go to an outdoor concert." At freshman orientation, I bought student-discounted tickets to Boston Calling, and suddenly my two greatest obsessions were combined: music, and picnics.
(Yes. Picnics. But I'll get back to that in a moment.)
Music festivals may seem tempting, taunting, even scary. I assure you that they are all of the above, but if you play your cards just right, you will win at music festivals.
7 Steps To Having The Best Time At A Music Festival
1. Bring a towel/blanket.
Not only will it secure you a spot, it'll be a lot more comfy than sitting on the ground or getting a grass stain.
(Peep my picnic blanket.)
2. Bring food.
Today I came home from Mixfest with upwards of ten bags of (free) chips, but that definitely would not have sustained me all day. Odds are your campus has a lunch-to-go option.
3. WATER!
Claim to fame: I was mothered by Ingrid Michaelson as she reminded me personally (as well as the other few thousand concertgoers...) to hydrate in between each of her songs.6. Wake up early.
Those lines aren't going to queue themselves.
5. Wear comfy shoes. And/or take a lot of Advil.
Your muscles will rebel against you after standing for hours, especially if you've been waiting to save that amazing view of the stage. But trust me, it's gonna be worth it.
(Not to mention how good of an ab workout all that fist pumping is.)
6. Put your phone down.
I think this picture speaks for itself:
Yes, I was this close to Shaggy. But oh, so far.
7. Be in the moment.
You can't truly appreciate an experience like this if you're stuck filming it. My advice: get that 10-second snap in, and then call it a day. You've got your evidence, now make those memories.
