"It's the music that binds us together," says American musician John Oats.
Music is truly an amazing thing that I've come to truly respect and love in my life.
Throughout my life, I've listened to all sorts of music and respected the artists along the way. However, I've never had a set genre of music that I always listened to. Somedays it might be pop music, or folk, or classic rock – I am always in different listening moods depending on the day. I can pretty much find something I like from any genre.
On the other hand, a lot of my friends are quite the opposite. I have some friends who have listened to the exact same genre their whole life, and they are not very eager (or open) to listen to different genres.
With me, I will catch myself obsessing and listening to the exact same song over and over – when I get bored, then I find something new, and then months or years later I return to it. It's a nice cycle that I definitely do not mind being a part of.
I believe a major contributor to me being this way is the way I was raised. My father loves hard-rock, yet my mother loves classical music. So, I've basically listened to the whole spectrum.
Being in college, my music selection has been interesting. I'll have songs I listen to when I'm studying, driving, walking to class, rainy days, sunny days, sad days, happy days. No matter what mood or state I'm in – I have a song for it.
Music allows me to go to another place, and truly relax. It also is a nice excuse when I am not really wanting to talk to people, or even hear others talking – you all know what I'm talking about. Everyone has those "music in, world out" days.
This year, I've been to a Justin Timberlake and Florence+the Machine concert, and in a few weeks, I'm going to see Travis Scott. All three of those artists are quite different, but I enjoy all of them so so so much.
I feel like having the ability to be able to listen to all sorts of music is a really nice trait to have. It really broadens my horizons, and viewpoints of the world. There is so so so much talent out there to be discovered, but so many people fall into the "mainstream" radio listening.
It's very easy to fall into that mainstream music pit, but I highly recommend everyone to listen to playlists other people have put together. You never know what you might like (or even hate). There is no true reason to stay stagnant in this life, especially with music taste.
With all of this being said, I am no music expert what so ever. I just really enjoy it, and feel that every artist should have the opportunity to be heard – because they are out there, waiting to be discovered, waiting to be heard; and they can be heard within a tap of a finger.
