Last week when we left off Charlie and Andria had a rather unromantic anniversary dinner. Let's pick up where we left off shall we?! (Here's the link in case you missed last week's article)
SCENE III
ANDRIA’s apartment, a small table next to the front door with the flowers from Charlie on it, two chairs, a couch, a coffee table, a door behind this. MRS. Jones is sitting in one of the chairs sobbing. CHARLIE enters.
CHARLIE
Where is she?
MRS. JONES says nothing but points to the back door. CHARLIE goes to the door, hesitates, and then enters. After a moment he comes back out.
CHARLIE
Have you called the police?
MRS. JONES
No, I haven’t. I thought you would do that.
CHARLIE
I’ll call right now, I suppose. I have the chiefs number, he’s a friend of a friend you know.
Perks of being a top surgeon is your privy to this kind of information.
CHARLIE pulls out his phone and dials a number.
CHARLIE
Hello, I’d like to talk to the police chief.
OFFICER IRVING enters stage right with the phone up to his ear.
OFFICER IRVING
Sir, do you realize what time it is? You’ve interrupted my Sugar Shack run!
CHARLIE
Officer, please, I’d really like to talk to the chief. It’s an emergency.
OFFICER IRVING
Of course it is. Everything is. Why do you want to talk to the chief?
CHARLIE
BECAUSE IT IS AN EMERGENCY!
OFFICER IRVING
Well, you don’t have to yell at me all angry like that. Sure, I’ll let ya talk to
the Chief if you come down to the station and being some donuts with you.
CHARLIE hangs up the phone and OFFICER IRVING exits.
CHARLIE
He wants me to bring him donuts just to talk to the chief! That man is impossible.
MRS. JONES
Charles…do you think we should hold a service for Andria?
CHARLIE
We can talk about it after I talk to the chief.
MRS. JONES
Would you mind buying the flowers Charlies?
CHARLIE
Sure, Mrs. Jones. She always smelled of lavender so perhaps some
lavender, maybe some red roses too. Does that sound alright?
MRS. JONES
Now see here Charlies, I happen to be a proud subscriber to
Floral Design Magazine so I know my flowers. Red is simply not appropriate.
CHARLIE
Well, what color would be?
MRS. JONES
If you really wanted to do roses then I suggest yellow.
CHARLIE
Yellow? Doesn’t that symbolize friendship?
MRS. JONES
Yes it does and seeing as you and my daughter were nothing
but friends I think it is the appropriate color.
CHARLIE
I think it’s about time I go meet with the police chief. Go home. I’ll call you afterwards.
CHARLIE leaves, slamming the door. Lights fade.
