Picture this: You're in Radio City Music Hall, and you're among some of the world's best selling and renowned musicians, along with up-and-coming acts. The finest in music and videos will be recognized and awarded. What do you think will happen?
Will someone flash the audience? Will they curse out the president on live TV? The possibilities are endless! Except...none of that ever happens, and you're just left underwhelmed. Welcome to the 2018 MTV VMAs!
I initially only watched it to see one particular musical act perform, and I was going to shut my TV off afterward. But something told me this award show might redeem itself. I sat through the whole thing for three and a half hours, but with each minute, the annoyance kept setting in.
In short, it was probably the worst VMAs I've ever witnessed. It was lackluster at worst and mediocre at best. Why was that?
In the past, the VMAs have had some extremely outrageous things go down. Britney kissed Madonna on stage in 2003. Britney's iconic “Gimme More" performance was in 2007. Kanye dissed Taylor Swift in 2009. Gaga wore her meat dress in 2010. Beyonce so famously announced her pregnancy with Blue Ivy in 2011.
...and that was the last time the VMAs wowed me out of nowhere. Sad, huh?
Some of the most “memorable" moments for me were, of course, Panic! At The Disco, Post Malone performing with Aerosmith, and Cardi B signing off her acceptance speech with, “And that's something that God gave me that you can't buy. Bitch." The latter had me cackling for 20 minutes straight. But that's where the fun ended.
Nicki Minaj performed, too. That much is a “whatever" thing for me, but why did she perform the song she did with someone who is a literal pedophile? That's enough to raise questions.
I genuinely cannot tell you about whatever else happened in this awards show. That is how boring and forgettable it was. It begs the question: What happened, and why did this once-legendary awards show become what it is now?
It's actually really sad to see that it has become like this. Aside from Robin Thicke's cringe-worthy performance with “twerking" (it's really not twerking) “legend" Miley Cyrus in 2013, I cannot tell you anything about any of the other ones past 2011.
Did MTV decide that it's time to tone it down? Did the celebrities just give up? Did they just not care?
It's bizarre to see the VMAs become a shadow of itself. Maybe it's because I'm getting old (at the age of 24), and don't pay much attention to pop culture as much as I used to in high school anymore. Maybe everyone's growing up and getting real...but with celebrities, that's a whole other Oprah show altogether.
At this point, it feels like the VMAs has run its course. I wouldn't even be mad if they decided to hang it up and retire the show in favor of a newer one. Maybe this is what they're secretly doing? Who knows, but my sentiments remain the same: The VMAs just aren't as exciting anymore, and growing up is a b****.
