Here at Arizona State, I'm pursuing a Journalism and Communications degree and quite honestly I'm not sure what I want to do with it.
At the moment my goal is to go into public relations. My dream job would be as an internal PR specialist for a concert venue, band or music festival. I've wanted to work in the music industry ever since I was little. Unfortunately, I was not musically gifted, so working for an artist would be the next best thing.
However, I am a writer at heart. I can easily see myself interviewing musicians, writing articles and shooting photos as a side hustle.
Aside from music, I'm passionate about politics and representation.
Ever since I could remember I would wake up to my mom watching Univision Noticias on channel 33.
As she yanked my curly hair into a tight ponytail, the news broadcasters would discuss the latest on Senate Bill 1070, how the I-10 is backed up or other updates on the morning newscast. I became infatuated with it to the point where I was the one waking up early to turn the tv on.
I loved hearing what was going on in the world but I never saw myself as a reporter on television. For the longest time, I thought that was the only form of reporting because neither one of my parents read the newspaper. As soon as I found out I could write the news and share stories of amazing, innovative people I knew that is what I wanted to do.
As a young Latina journalist, my goal is to bring real stories of real people into the media.
From Chicana entrepreneurs to Indigenous authors to Black business owners, I want to do my part in giving them a space to advocate for themselves.
In at least American media, people tend to focus on the problems marginalized people "bring" or face like discrimination or immigration. As a result, the news has become negative over the years. I want to bring the joy I felt as a little girl back into the world by giving people a space to share their hardships and journeys.
That's the exciting thing about being a journalist, the options are almost endless.
