Moving In With Your Best Friend

"I hope you guys are still friends after this year."

That's what happens when you move in with your best friend before the start of your senior year of college. Family members mention their hopes for friendship to outlast the lease, but we're just worried about forgetting to feed our fish.

Sometimes friends are just that- someone you go out with, hang out with, see movies with, but never see on a daily basis. Once you move in with your best friend, however, living just gets a whole lot better. Here are some things that happen when you live with your best friend:

1. You already have things in common.

You became friends for a reason- probably to do with your common taste in movies, shows, or music. Your Netflix watchlist grows, and you can binge while discussing the best and worst of each episode. Also when a season is over, you don't have to experience withdrawal alone (Ahem, Orange Is The New Black). Not to mention that Netflix becomes an integral part of your routine- due to lack of funds for cable.

You watch everything together. And, due to the one shared Netflix account, you know when the other watched without you.

2. You give honest advice to each other.

"...that's what you're having for breakfast?"

Yes, sometimes toast burns, but we're out of bread.

3. You know each other's boundaries.

Even though you're really close, sometimes it can be a bit much. Friendship has taught you how to know when each other is mad, so you've been trained to recognize that case of resting bitch face you know to avoid. Now is also a good time to invest in your best-friend-turned-roomate's favorite type of ice cream.

4. You always have someone to talk to.

Whether you're in the mood to vent until you forget why you started venting in the first place, or you just want general socialization, you know that your best friend- the person who knows your most embarrassing moment and deepest darkest secret- will be there to provide their advice.

5. You have the same taste.

Your fridge and food pantry are always full of the foods you both love, with a few exceptions that may be completely off limits to your roomie. Meals may be spur of the moment or planned ahead, but definitely delicious because you and your roomate made them yourself. Viral cooking videos from Facebook suddenly become recipe favorites, and your diet can sometimes depends on what looks good in the store. But never fear- your roomate may keep you accountable for what you eat.

Living with your best friend makes you even closer- even if things get hard.

Just don't forget to feed the fish.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
