10 Things You Immediately Recognize When Moving To Pennsylvania

It's a state of mountains, it's a state of farmland, it's a state with distinct features that give it its appeal.

Living my whole life in New Jersey—just 20 miles outside New York City— I was constantly in the midst of the "hustle and bustle" of a metropolitan area, where everybody is in an infinite race against time. I sought to slow down the pace of my life upon moving to college and I recognized that Pennsylvania decelerated my lifestyle just how I had hoped.

However, I also experienced a sort of culture shock as I noticed some glaring differences between Pennsylvania and the Garden State—differences that give Pennsylvania its ultimate charm. Here are 10 things you come to realize when you move to Pennsylvania:

1. Everybody from Pennsylvania describes their home in relation to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

Because there really is nothing in between, right? Except, of course, Happy Valley.

2. Or they describe their home by their county.

Many people say they live in Bucks County, Chester County, Erie County or Allegheny County. Then they ask me what county I'm from and I have to think for a minute.

3. The town names are, well, unconventional.

I often joke that many cross country runners live in Mile Run, Pennsylvania. I often joke that there is a Jersey Shore when the Jersey Shore is many miles east. I often joke that there is a town called Intercourse...for obvious reasons.

4. The uphills have no downhills.

It is truly some geographical phenomenon that whenever you walk somewhere in Pennsylvania, it is uphill both ways. Somehow that's possible.

5. There's the beloved aroma of farm animals.

Given the choice, I would prefer to smell the grazing cows than to inhale some of the stenches on city streets.

6. Colleges...colleges everywhere.

In the midst of all of the open farmland, Pennsylvania truly is a giant rectangle filled with colleges and universities. The major cities teem with colleges but many other schools are dispersed throughout the state.

7. The buggies.

Home to many Amish people, you know you're in Pennsylvania when you get caught behind a horse-drawn buggy on the road. And as you fall into this slower pace of life, you appreciate rolling behind one of these treasures found predominately in the Keystone State.

8. The ongoing debate between Sheetz and Wawa.

This argument about the superior grocery store can get pretty heated as those from eastern Pennsylvania fiercely defend Wawa while those out west are staunch advocates for Sheetz.

9. Everywhere you go, there's a picturesque view.

If there's any benefit to all of the uphill walks, there are some pretty spectacular views of farmland and mountains once you're at the top.

10. The "Penn State people" are deemed the crazy ones.

And, as the geographic dead center of Pennsylvania, they take tremendous pride in this title. WE ARE!

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."
