A few helpful tips for getting out of the dorm room

It is the end of the year and summer is about to begin. That is until you move everything out of your dorm room. It seems simple considering it was not that hard moving everything in during the beginning of the year. That is when you realize you are wrong.

During the course of the year if you are unorganized or do not, clean your room at least a couple times a month moving out becomes a nightmare. There are papers and bits of garage you have to sort through you are not throwing away something important. There is dust on things you forgot existed in your room, little spiders that decide to take up residence in things left in the corner.

It is not until moving-out day that you realize how messy or lazy you are as a student. If you think you have all day to clean, well think again. The RA wants to head home just as much as you do and housing does not mind charging you for every extra minute you are scrabbling after move out time. Here are a few helpful tips to avoid problems you could have when moving out.

1. Clean during the year

I am not saying to deep clean the place and blow torch mold. Sweeping and cleaning the bathroom on a regular basis and avoid a high score on the "ech" scale. Not to mention if you have a dust allergy please invest in Zyrtec or something for the sneezing and stuffy nose (not product placement).

2. Pack in advance

That does not mean you have to leave everything boxed up. If you realize you do not, need something like winter clothes in May then just send that stuff out early. It is a bitch to pack fluffy or bulky clothes into a suitcase when they take up so much space. As exams get closer, start looking at the random bits of paper in your room and see if they are important. A receipt you got from Starbucks for some coffee in comparison to a document from the school can be thrown away. If you have a ton of clothes maybe go through them and see if some of them could be donated or sold to a thrift store. It gives you less to worry about and more space in the end.

3. Dear God, please bring boxes

What often happens when I move in is not I do not bring a lot with me. I share a storage space with my sisters, which is lucky for me, but it's for stuff that should not go home. For example, I do not need every single note I have taken or textbook on some class that has nothing to do with my major. That stuff is either thrown away or put in storage. Whatever you do when it comes to taking stuff out of your room, I cannot stress the importance of boxes. I kid you not at some point, everyone has a realization that they collected more stuff over the year and there is nowhere for it to go. Moving at all it will be a pain in the ass and shoving it away does not work as well as you think it will.

These are just a couple of tips for moving out. People have their own experiences or ways of getting out of school as fast as they can. I have found theses have helped me out.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
