Moving (Fashion) Forward: The Hot And Not List Of 2015

2015 has taken "Throwback Thursday" too literally when it comes to the latest fashion and accessory trends. It is finally time to see what is still hot, and what is not.

Moving (Fashion) Forward: The Hot And Not List Of 2015

History has a crazy way of repeating itself, and so do fashion trends, but that does not mean all trends should make a comeback.

Recent trends have consisted of throwback looks from the '70s and '90s-- and let me tell you, some of them should have DEFINITELY stayed in their decade.

I'm going to apologize in advance to all of you who have fallen victim to these trends. I know fashion is a way of expressing yourself, but really-- jelly sandals when you are 20 years old? Slightly ridiculous looking. Here is the Hot and Not List of 2015:

1. SKIRTS

Plaid Skirts: HOT.

Denim Skirts: NOT.

Plaid skirts are a staple in almost every fall season, so it's a given that they are hot for 2015. This time, plaid skorts (skirt + shorts) are very trendy and also hot commodity.

WHY are denim skirts making a comeback? Don't get me wrong I absolutely loved my Abercrombie and Hollister denim skirts...when I was in 7th grade, but that ship sailed a long time ago.

Denim skirts are slowly re-appearing all over major department stores as well as smaller shops. As much as you may want to give in and purchase one to re-live your middle school days, absolutely do not. Don't do it.

2. SHOES

Platform Sandals: HOT.

For all you shorties out there like me, platform sandals are a lifesaver when it comes to your everyday outfits. You are not going to wear wedges everywhere you go when you want that extra height. Steve Madden, Dolce Vita, and Kate Spade have the best platform sandals for 2015, so I would advise you to go pick up a pair of these cute and practical shoes.

Teva Sandals: NOT

Just no. Unless you are going hiking or kayaking or better yet-- five-years-old and don't know how to tie your shoes, do not even think about buying these sandals. These shoes are the farthest thing from hot.

Birkenstock Sandals: HOT.

I know I just bashed Tevas, but those of you who are looking for a more natural, earthy-like sandal, resort to a pair of Birks. Recently these sandals have made a huge comeback after Birkenstock launched a new line of sandals with a ton of cool straps and new styles (the Yara sandal is my favorite).

If you still fit into your old Birks from 7th grade, bring them out of the box and start wearing them. For the rest of you who probably got rid of yours, go out and consider buying another pair, because you won't regret it.

3. NECKLACES

Beaded Choker: HOT.

$5 Plastic Choker: NOT.

Chokers have made a remarkable comeback this past spring and I'm not sure if I love it or absolutely hate it. Luckily, the choker necklace has been modified for 2015. Sorry girls- but ditch your $5 black expandable choker necklace and upgrade to something more mature looking with beads as opposed to cheap plastic. For those of you who are ready to re-vamp your choker and splurge a little, check out Free People or Urban Outfitters for some cute necklaces.

4. UNDERGARMENTS

Calvin Klein Underwear: HOT.

Day of the Week Underwear: NOT.

Normally I wouldn't have thought to put underwear on a hot and not list, but for this year it's almost impossible to ignore. If you didn't know before, now you know that "Calvins" are a super hot trend for 2015, but this isn't the first time they were all the rage.

Back in '92, Kate Moss began her modeling career campaigning Calvin Klein underwear with Marky Mark. Now these basic and practical- yet super trendy underwear are all over Instagram with the hashtag "MyCalvins" to promote the campaign.

7. HAIR

The High Half Up/ Half Down: HOT.

For those of you who have absolutely no clue what I'm talking about, you might be more familiar with the term "srat pony." When and why did a high half up/ half down ponytail coin this nickname? No idea, but it's becoming a thing.

Do you remember when you were a baby and your mother tied your hair in a ponytail so high on the top of your head with a scrunchie? Well, you can re-live your baby days because this hair style is back, and if you execute this pony correctly- it could be very stylish.

8. ACCESSORIES

Leather/Beaded/Printed Fanny Pack- HOT.

' 80s "Vintage" JanSport Fanny Pack- NOT.

For all you music festival goers, make sure you ditch your bulky crossbody this summer and try a practical fanny pack. I know it sounds strange switching out an adorable fringe bag for something your grandma used to wear all the time, but fanny packs are in now and back better than ever. Celebrities such as Kylie Jenner and Rihanna have been spotted sporting these functional accessories, so if they are wearing them, why can't you?

Disclaimer: When I say fanny packs are in, I mean ones with studs and print, not your mom's JanSport from the '80s. This stylish fanny pack below is by Show Me Your Mumu.

9.TECHNOLOGY

Disposable Cameras: HOT.

Digital Cameras: NOT.

It's time to put your small Nikon or Cannon digital camera away for a while, because photography has become old school again. Polaroid cameras as well as disposables are back, and I couldn't be more excited.

Although film is nearly impossible to get developed anymore and costs a fortune, it is still fun to use these devices at a festival, traveling, or shooting around in your spare time.

10. PANTS

Flared Jeans/Pants: HOT.

Capris: NOT.

Flared jeans have been in and out of style for a while now, but for 2015, they are most definitely in. The two hottest trends for 2015 in terms of pants have been flared and ripped boyfriend jeans.

Sorry capris, but your time here is up. Not only do flared jeans make your legs look slimmer, they are also perfect to pair with wedges. When wearing boyfriend jeans, style them with the shoes previously mentioned in #2 for a casual day look or pair them with a heel and you are set.

For those long nights that turn into mornings when the struggle is real.

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

As this semester wraps up, students can’t help but be stressed about finals. After all, our GPAs depends on these grades! What student isn’t worrying about their finals right now? It’s “goodbye social life, hello library” time from now until the end of finals week.

1. Finals are weeks away, I’m sure I’ll be ready for them when they come.
