College graduation is an exciting time, filled with new beginnings and opportunities. The world is your oyster! However, believe it or not, graduating college does not guarantee you a $50,000 a year job right away. Shocking, I know. Therefore, it is not uncommon for recently graduated college students to move back home once they have finished up their degree, especially if they have thousands of dollars in student loans to pay off.
When I thought about this article topic, I had originally wanted to take a more negative spin on moving back home. However, the more I thought about it, the more I realized there are way more pros than cons. I also think it is just a good idea to try and take a positive look on things like this.
One of the main reasons why going back home after graduating college is an awesome option is the fact that you can save so much money! You don’t have to spend money on small things, like batteries and stamps, which you now know add up quickly. This is prime time to start saving money and planning for the future.
Another huge positive of moving back home is food! There is no more having to survive a week on just five dollars for food. You can actually have a meal, with vegetables and meat, and not microwaved food. You probably didn’t even realize you missed fruits and vegetables until you had some for the first time in months.
Spending time with family is another perk to moving home. Think about how much younger and naïve you were when you first moved away. Now you probably have a new appreciation for your parents, since you see how much they have done for you. You have also had a taste of the real world and have a better understanding of what your parents have to deal with every day. It’s like your relationship has evolved, and is now based more on a mutual respect for one another.
There are also smaller perks to moving back home. You don’t have to do your laundry, or at least the detergent is free. You have a backup alarm clock so you are never late for work. It’s just like the old days when your mom or dad had to wake you up because you slept through your alarm. You also have a trustworthy DD on call.
So I have to say moving back home is not the end of the world, it can actually be one of the best decisions you make. It is just another stepping stone to getting to where you want to be in life. It is important to stay positive and keep your goals in mind. Ultimately, you should make the best of the situation and be grateful for your parents; they are willing to let you move back in with them, after all!
