Hello, everybody! This is going to be part two of my list of movies I saw this year. If you want to go see part one then just click here. So this year I saw an abundant amount of movies in theaters. And, for the most part, I enjoyed my time with them. Now once again let me remind you that some movies on my list were not new and were special event movies but I'm still including them because I saw them in a theater with an audience nevertheless. So let's continue...
11. Finding Dory
Although before going into this I felt this movie was a bit too late to be coming out (13 years since Finding Nemo) I still knew that I had to go see it because I was such a big fan of the first movie. I knew that If I didn't go see it then the thought of that reality would have gnawed at my brain and I wouldn't be at peace. So I go into it not expecting much and setting my expectations of it being at least decent. And I was right, it was decent. I was a little down that I didn't laugh as much. I think there were only two times in the movie that I laughed which was a stark contrast to the first movie. Overall it's a nice movie and something you and your younger relative can watch together.
12. The Shallows
This was not a terrible movie. It was bad yet I still thought the movie was worth my time. I would not have gone to see this movie alone. The only reason I saw this was because that was the group choice for the night. The movie is basically just a woman trapped on a rock that is literally just like half a mile away from shore but cannot swim back because there is an abnormally large shark bent on giving her a nasty death. A couple times the movie made me laugh out loud because of its absurdness yet there was saving grace moments like when her 'friend,' the bird injured on the rock with her, would get screen time.
13. Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates
It was hilarious. The last time I laughed so much in theaters was with Bridesmaids . And both movies have that same connection with all of it revolving on a wedding. The movie's title gives it all away and the movie is basically these two unlikely pairs hitting it off and getting themselves into shenanigans. Of course, the movie is going to involve mushy gushy feelings and characters professing their inadequacy and uncertainty with their romantic matches which annoys me but I can give it a pass if in-between I'm laughing out loud.
14. Batman: The Killing Joke
The first like half hour of this movie is all that everyone complains about. Yes as I was watching I did feel it was an odd way to start the movie since there is literally no mention of the Joker but people I believe shat on it way too much. Those damn fanboys I tell ya! Anyways the rest of the movie was crazy awesome. I'm a big Joker fan and I came into this movie without reading the source material which is the graphic novel of the same name. Having said that I was still surprised of my amazement when scenes of this movie really got to me. It was like a gut punch to the stomach. Very disturbing even for a character like Joker I was stunned to see such savagery depicted. The fact that it was animated probably lessened the blow but still rubbed me the wrong way. Especially the part where Joker makes light of a situation with song and dance even though a horrible psychological crime is being committed to a certain individual I don't want to name because of spoilers. And the ending is what really gets to me because something happened which I would of never have guessed was possible.
15. Suicide Squad
I wrote extensively about this movie already; click here. This is the short version. The movie never really concentrates on the squad or the characters within them. Nothing really impresses in this movie. There are too many moments where you question if certain characters would react in the way they did which brings in unauthenticity. Joker is too over the top even for his sake. The ending conflict is terrible.
16. Akira
Wow! Do you ever beat yourself up for not knowing or watching something sooner? That's the feeling I got with this movie. I've heard of this movie before but I finally got around to see it and in the best possible way, on the big screen with an audience. I hate how long it took me. This movie is definitely for me. Sci-fi, drama, philosophical, action-packed, depictions of blood and violence, the dangers of military power, supernatural phenomena, megalomania, friendship; all of these things are included in this movie. Beautiful animation and great sound. You see this movie and it almost feels like you're experiencing someone's nightmare together with them. The ending left me confused but in a good way. In the way that makes you realize that you have to see the movie multiple times to understand the overall story and appreciate the message. I can't wait to see it again and again.
