What movies did I see this year of 2016

Movies I Saw This Year Part 1

This year I feel as if I saw a lot of movies in theaters. I think this year must have been the most movies I've seen and the year still has three more months left. I want to tell you about each of them briefly. This is just part one of my complete list. Although some items on this list contain non-new movies and just so happened to be one-day special events, I still count them because I saw them in a theater with an audience. So let's begin...

1. Blade Runner (The Final Cut)

Of course, I have seen this movie already and because I enjoy it so much I went to go see it on the big screen with my friend who is a very big fan of the movie. Visually it is very compelling to watch what a futuristic world would look like, especially of my hometown of Los Angeles. It is a detective movie where the main character tries to find four fugitive cyborgs. The movie touches on the meaning of what it is to be human and the extent of human empathy. You should definitely check it out if sci-fi movies interest you.

2. Mad Max: Fury Road / Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior

WITNESS!! This movie was from last year (2015) and this was my second time watching it. What a ride this was. I was at the edge of my seat most of the movie. It just lingers with anticipation. Not only is the cinematography one of my favorites but most of the stunts were practical at the behest of the director. You should watch this movie if no other reason then to see the harrowing action sequences.

As for Mad Max 2, it was my first time seeing it. You can definitely tell its age but it didn't take away from the experience. Speaking of which, the experience is the depressing wasteland that the characters cope with and the hope that they cling on to. This is basically a movie of haves and have-nots and the confrontation between two factions with the main character caught in the middle of it. Get ready to be swept away into this world of grit and desperation.

3. Deadpool

It was an enjoyable movie. That is all.

4. Zoolander 2

Okay so even though this movie has a 23 percent on RottenTomatoes I was laughing from start to finish. I love stupid humor. And that is all that this was. I'm a fan of the character Derek Zoolander and you better believe I was going to see the sequel because fans never give up their resolve. I'm so glad I was able to see this with two of my best friends. We were the only ones laughing in the theater. Bless their hearts.

5. The Witch

In the theater, with just me and a couple others, I was feeling uneasy. What an experience. For one I'm not really into horror films but I knew coming to this that this one was going to be different. It had won the best director award at the Sundance Film Festival. I can understand it might not appeal to everyone due to its uneven pacing and heavy old-English dialogue. For me, the dialogue was a big part of why I liked it. Language is what makes characters thoughts crystal clear. Add this to disturbing sequences, unnerving scenery, and just a constant feeling of dread and you got yourself something special. I will probably write about this movie more or perhaps do a video going more in depth at what I thought of this lovely but haunting experience.

6. Spotlight

I didn't really know what I was getting into going into it. My best friend who I don't see very often told me to go watch this with him and I automatically agreed. I had an idea of what it was going to be but I didn't know it was going to be probably one of the best movies I have ever seen. It ended up winning the Oscar for Best Picture of 2016. How can a movie about the scandal of Catholic Priests molesting children engulf my attention so much from start to finish? Your eyes are glued to the screen and judiciously follow the events. Watch this movie.

7. 10 Cloverfield Lane

I was a fan of the first movie, Cloverfield, and I have heard a lot of people don't like it. So I was surprised when people were jazzed about this movie. It was probably due to the mystery of it all that JJ Abrams is so good at pulling off without anyone leaking anything. Most of the movie is what you would expect of three people living together confined inside never to go out unto the world. And then it gets to the ending which fell flat for me. Go and enjoy the first three-fourths of the movie.

8. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice

F*ck this movie. That is all.

9. Captain America: Civil War

I'm so done with Marvel movies. I just think I've become over-saturated by them. Yet, my interest for the characters always compel me to go watch them. It was decent. The only thing I looked forward to were the action sequences.

10. X-men: Apocalypse

If you like X-men as a whole then watch this. If you don't like X-men, skip it.

Stay tuned for part two of the rest of the movies I saw this year in theaters.

I know every college student has daily thoughts throughout their day. Whether you're walking on campus or attending class, we always have thoughts running a mile a minute through our heads. We may be wondering why we even showed up to class because we'd rather be sleeping, or when the professor announces that we have a test and you have an immediate panic attack.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate
Mental Floss

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It's the most wonderful time of the year! Christmas is one of my personal favorite holidays because of the Christmas traditions my family upholds generation after generation. After talking to a few of my friends at college, I realized that a lot of them don't really have "Christmas traditions" in their family, and I want to help change that. Here's a list of Christmas traditions that my family does, and anyone can incorporate into their family as well!

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
