Note: This is just a list that is in my opinion, the three movies that people of my generation should see but probably have not. This is just a good way to get a debate going on what movies my generation should see.
So really this article is for those born after 1994 who maybe have not seen or perhaps even heard the movies that you will see on this list. I came up with the idea for his after the first day of one of my classes, the professor had us do the most awkward thing ever, tell two truths and one lie about yourself and the rest of the class has to guess what the lie is. Well, one of my truths was that my favorite movie of all time is Goodfellas. Only myself, the professor and one other student had seen the movie. The worst part, the rest of the class HADN'T EVEN HEARD OF THE MOVIE. WHAT?!?! So as you read along you will see what I believe to be the three best movies those from my generation should see. Grab your popcorn and enjoy.
Rules:
When creating this list the number one and only rule in selecting the movies that would be eligible are those that were released before the year 1994. Solely for the fact that it was the year that I was born and this leaves MANY movies to be available for selection.
1) Goodfellas (1990)
Now having this at number one on my list it can't help but seem a little biased. As I have already stated that this is my favorite movie of all time. Though hear me out please. This is arguably one of the 15 greatest movies of all time in the history of film. It is the best movie by far from one of the top greatest directors in the history of film making history, Martin Scorsese. This man has directed some of the greatest movies of all time. From Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Casino, The Aviator, and all the way to The Departed (I'll leave the Wolf of Wall Street off of that list because it has only been three years since that movie and I cannot wait to see how well it ages). On top of the amazing directorial skills, the movie had quite an excellent cast, with Ray Liotta, Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci. All having incredibly memorable performances with other supporting cast members turning in great performances as well. In regards to the performances of Liotta and Pesci, they provide two of my favorite moments in film history. WARNING: VIDEOS CONTAIN EXPLICIT LANGUAGE
In 1991 Goodfellas would go on to receive multiple nominations at the Oscars, six in total, but would only take one win home and that would be Best Supporting Actor for Joe Pesci, which if you watched the video above you would have seen just a little bit of a truly remarkable performance. This movie may not have been number one in the Academy's hearts but it will always be number one in mine.
2) Tombstone (1993)
WHO DOESN'T LIKE WESTERN'S??? My guess is most of you reading this and most people my age. Tombstone isn't the best western that has ever been made but it can be argued that it is. Personally, I hadn't seen Tombstone until The Hateful Eight came out in 2015. After talking about the recent westerns that Quinton Tarantino made, Django Uncahined and Hateful, with my dad and talking about how they were some of the best westerns made, he told me I should go watch Tombstone and boy I was not disappointed. The film mainly details the events that transpired between the famous cowboys Wyatt Earp, William Brocius, Johnny Ringo and Doc Holliday. Playing these characters is what I considered to be quite a "heavy hitter" kind of cast. Kurt Russell, Bill Paxton, Sam Elliot, Powers Boothe and Val Kilmer. Most of you may know Kilmer from his most famous role as Batman in Batman Forever (1995). Oh.... I'm being told he also played some sort of antagonist role in a movie about fighter pilots along side Tom Cruise. Huh... I guess he was pretty good in that also if you like that sort of thing. Here's some of Tombstone to maybe change your mind about westerns.
Tombstone wasn't a movie showered with awards and great critiques but you would figure a movie done so well in a genre that is hard to pull off and it is received considerably well that the director of the film would benefit from that success. However that would not be the case. The director George P. Cosmatos before taking on the task of directing Tombstone had directed nine films before Tombstone. The most notable among them being Rambo: First Blood Part II and Cobra. Now, when those are your most "notable" films it doesn't exactly make for a good resume.Though with Tombstone it seemed as if you may had to start taking him seriously as a director. That didn't turn out to be the case as he would only go on to direct one more film, Shadow Conspiracy (1997). The film did something that is almost nearly impossible to do. It received a whopping 0% rating from the critic website Rotten Tomatoes. Well, at least he'll always have Tombstone. I'll always be your huckleberry Tombstone.
3) Red Dawn (1984)
Now let me start this by saying that this movie only made my list because my father convinced me to watch as he put, "THE ONLY RED DAWN THAT MATTERS." Obviously he is taking a shot at the 2012 remake which stars Thor also known as Chris Hemsworth and the fat kid from the Nickelodeon TV show Drake and Josh. Now when this movie came out, the United States was in the middle of The Cold War. At the time, tensions were high and it was at least a little conceivable that the events that took place in the movie could take place in the real world. The film takes places in a slightly alternate world where World War III is taking place. Soviet and Cuban troops invade a small town in Colorado and it's up to a group of young Americans, who would call themselves, the WOLVERINES (I'm only going to put WOLVERINES in caps because you can only say it while yelling, because saying it any other way just wouldn't be doing the movie justice) to try and stop the Soviet Union from ceasing control of their town. What a plot right?!?!?!
What made it enjoyable for those watching it, especially during that time, was the idea that a group of kids could fight back against the commies and try and take back their homeland. After conversations with my dad, that is what has made the movie stick with him for so long. Watching some young kids kick the crap out of some commies. The people doing the kicking is quite the cast. Most notably, the leader of the WOLVERINES is none other than Patrick Swayze, who let's just say it, the dude came out with hit after hit after hit. We're talking The Outsiders, Red Dawn, Road House, Ghost, Dirty Dancing and Point Break all over the span of eight years. I mean c'mon man save some other roles for the other guys out there. Also among the WOLVERINES were C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, CHARLIE FREAKING SHEEN, and Jennifer Grey just to name a few. I can't ruin the ending for you because I believe that people who spoil ending are the worst so be sure to go and check it out.
I hope you all enjoyed my list and maybe you agreed or disagreed, if you have a different three or maybe they should be in a different order let me know. So now it is time to go in the most obvious way possible... WOLVERINES!!!
