In the coming months I know many of us are anxiously awaiting the new Star Wars movie, or perhaps Justice League, but often a bunch of movies don't get talked about until closer to their release. If you love movies as much as I do, you periodically check trailers for upcoming films and track their releases. Or if you're crazy, you click on the Internet Movie Database's page for films to be released in 2017.
The following list contains some titles that I found to be interesting and haven't been hyped up very much. Some of them might be interesting, some of them might be terrible. But they seemed worth keeping an eye out for.
ACTION MOVIES
1. King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
Director Guy Ritchie brings his take on another piece of classic literature. Ritchie's previous foray into the classics was the successful Sherlock Holmes franchise starring Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law. Law returns in this film, but as the antagonist, Vortigern. The cast also includes Aidan Gillan (Littlefinger in Game of Thrones), Michael McElhatton (Roose Bolton in Game of Thrones), Eline Powell (Bianca in Game of Thrones), and David Beckham. This is definitely one I am excited to see.
2. Arsenal
Nicolas Cage as a gangster. With that wig. I have no idea if this movie will be any good but I'd see it for Nick Cage alone.
3. The Beguiled
I'm so pleased that Westerns have been making a comeback. The Beguiled was first adapted into a film in 1971 with Clint Eastwood. Though Eastwood was the top billed actor, the story revolved around a bunch of young women during the Civil War. Sofia Coppola has adapted the screenplay as well as direct. I can only hope she'll make the women as bad-ass as possible.
4. Dunkirk
So even though this is a Christopher Nolan movie, I have seen very little advertising for it. Especially since it has Harry Styles in it!?! Nolan is a masterful filmmaker and I cannot wait to see his latest project. Also Hans Zimmer is doing the film score. And it has Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Mark Rylance. This is going to be a big hit.
DRAMAS/TRILLERS
1. Tulip Fever
To me, this smells like it's trying to be Oscar bait. Christoph Waltz, Judi Dench, Alicia Vikander. Plus, Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Zach Galifianakis! The style of the film is reminiscent of the Girl with a Pearl Earring film starring Scarlett Johansson, which makes sense since both are set in Denmark and both literally and figuratively look like a Vermeer painting.
2. Weightless
Since about 2010, Terrence Malick has been cranking out about a movie a year. The description for Weightless makes it seem like it could be anything from a rom-com to a spin-off of "Nashville". Set around the music scene of Austin, Texas, Malick's latest film has got a star-studded cast. Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Christian Bale, Cate Blanchett, and Natalie Portman, to name a few. But having Malick at the helm doesn't mean it's going to be a great movie. Have you seen Tree of Life? Looked so good, but was actually so bad.
3. Unforgettable
Katherine Heigl looks so much like Gwyneth Paltrow that I can't tell if it's intentional or not. This movie is probably horrible but I'm here for this Paltrow look-alike.
4. Bitter Harvest
I'm sticking this one in this section because even though it's a "war movie" it seems more like a drama than an action movie. The director, George Mendeluk, hasn't made any mainstream-successful films. Samantha Barks takes a step away from musicals (you may remember her from Les Misérables). Max Irons and Terence Stamp round out the main leads. I can't help but think this is a subtle propaganda piece considering how a lot of the Western world feels about Putin and Crimea but who knows.
5. Loving Vincent
The initial tests for this movie ran around the internet, but it had been slated as "in production" since 2011. Now Loving Vincent is nearly complete and is set to for release later this year. Watch the CBS Sunday Morning segment above for a behind the scenes look on how the art was made.
SCI-FI MOVIES
1. LIFE
There are so many space/alien movies coming out lately, and a lot of them aren't even Star Wars related! LIFE looks a bit like the Alien movies, but you cannot deny the awesome cast; Jake Gyllenhaal, Ryan Reynolds, and Rebecca Ferguson (The Girl on the Train, The White Queen)!
2. Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets
This one first came to my attention last year when I was looking at Dane DeHaan's IMDb profile (if you can't tell, I love his work). Though in English, the film is a French production and based on a series of 1960's French comic books. Which explains some of the spacesuits... I love the people involved (another DeHaan/Delevingne project) but this trailer makes me worry that it'll be another Jupiter Ascending.
3. The Circle
Unfortunately, this Emma Watson flick might get overshadowed by Beauty and the Beast, but I'm certainly intrigued. Tom Hanks plays a Steve Jobs-esque tech lord worthy of an episode of "Black Mirror".
FAMILY/COMEDY
1. A Dog's Purpose
Okay, so you may have seen this trailer floating around on Facebook, but it looks original and heartwarming. The trailer alone makes your heart swell. People love dogs. People's relationships with dogs are so special and there is a common factor for why we love dogs. This does not seem like "just another dog movie".
2. Zeroville
Directed by and starring James Franco, Zeroville is set for release in September 2017, so no trailer yet. The incredibly vague plot summary says the film is about "a young actor who arrives in 1969 during a transitional time in the Industry". The late 60's and early 70's was an interesting time for film. MGM Musicals like Singin' In The Rain were not longer popular. For point of reference, Rosemary's Baby was released in 1968 and could be seen as the end of the studio-system films and the beginning of something new. Franco's film could either be amazing or terrible. It's too soon to call it.
3. The Greatest Showman
Hugh Jackman playing P.T. Barnum and IMDb has it tagged as a "biography, drama, musical". Since the cast also includes Michelle Williams, Zac Efron, and Zendaya (all musically inclined), I can only hope that this is gonna be a full blown musical, not just a movie with music.

The Little Hours
War Machine
Suburbicon
To the Bone
Iron Sky: The Coming Race
