These movies provide some of the most valuable lessons we learn from love and forgiveness to inclusiveness and hard work. Grab a bag of popcorn and a blanket while curling up for a emotional roller coaster that will leave you feeling empowered!
1. Stepmom
Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts play contrasting mother and stepmother in this beautiful film. Stepmom taught me that family does not have to be blood. Through time and very hard work, we can overcome obstacles that make us uncomfortable that lead to unexpected relationships. Don't be afraid to belt out "Ain't no Mountain High Enough" with them!
2. The Book of Eli
This movie has a big twist at the end, so if you like surprises, I highly recommend it! After watching Denzel with Mila Kunis, I learned that we never truly know a person. There are hidden thoughts, qualities, beliefs, and aspects to people that are kept secret to outsiders. Remember that before you judge.
3. The Notebook
Who doesn't love Noah and Allie's passionate love/hate relationship? The Notebook teaches us to never, EVER, give up. Fight for what you want, even if years pass, don't let go if you still have that passion!
4. Freedom Writers
Hillary Swank was the perfect actress for her role in Freedom Writers. This moving film keeps one in check about reality. There are people in our own towns, communities, and neighborhoods who are fighting a variety of battles. We can play a positive role in changing their lives and helping people overcome adversity. By paying attention and having true compassion, society can greatly benefit.
5. The Pursuit of Happiness
Is it possible to not cry a river while watching this movie? Will and Jayden Smith play a father and son financially struggling to make ends meet. The father's dedication and love for his son causes his persistence to NEVER give up! It is so inspirational to see someone never complain or give up, but do whatever it takes. Working hard does pay off! Family is everything.
6. The Shawshank Redemption
This story by Stephen King gives viewers a new perspective on prisons and those they house. It focuses on the struggles that are posed not only behind the bars but outside and beyond them as well. We often forget that re-assimilating is very difficult, not only for released prisoners, but all types of people coming back to society. It is important to find our niche, wherever that may be. Plus who doesn't want to listen to Morgan Freeman for a few hours? "Get busy livin' or get busy dyin'."
7. The Blind Side
After watching Sandra Bullock and Tim McGraw take in a misfortunes teen, who isn't inspired to help someone face adversity? I love the strength and confidence Bullock portrays while standing up to her friends, advocating for her son.
