You've just gotten home from a long Tuesday at class and at work. The rain patters at the window of your small apartment and you slowly crawl into the cool embrace of your bed. What now?
Well, my first instinct would be to pop in a deep, pensive film, or just a simple slow-burn horror.
Next time you have one of those rainy, gloomy days and want to check out a good film, give these a shot!
1. Punch Drunk Love
I can't recommend this one enough for a rainy day. There isn't a ton of dialogue or music, so while you're enjoying this cute and fun Adam Sandler love story, you can still hear that pitter patter outside your window. Not just that, but the film relies heavily upon cool hues such as blues, greens and violets.
2. Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049
Both of these films have stunning visuals and typically have settings where the weather is fairly overcast and rainy. Like "Punch Drunk Love" there isn't a ton of music and dialogue is typically short and sweet so you can enjoy those soothing thunderstorm sounds.
3. Birdman
"Birdman" is a bit crazier than the previous two entries, but provides a really deep theme that somehow fits perfectly with the rain. The overall ambiance is also primarily damp and cool. It's a complex movie that will get your brain moving. I seem to think better when it's cloudy outside so this one works for me.
4. Love, Simon
The first time I saw Love, Simon was one of my favorite theater experiences I've ever had. I was working late, until about 9 PM, and the showing began at 9:50. I was the only person in the theater and got to experience the cute, John Green, MTV-esque narrative in complete silence. Then, I walk out of the theater to a soft, beautiful snowfall. It was so tranquil and calming. Check this one out on a gloomy day, for sure.
5. Zodiac
Another movie with a cool ambiance and deep narrative, "Zodiac" is perfect for a stormy night. I remember one day specifically where I piled myself under the covers and just watched Zodiac in the dark. It was simply perfect. Check this one out for a calm, but exciting thriller.
6. Psycho
For some reason, I have an attachment to black and white movies while it's raining. There's just this nice atmosphere that surrounds a film void of color. Not just that, but like "Zodiac," "Psycho" is an exciting horror to watch while bundled up under the covers.
7. Casablanca
My favorite movie of all time really is perfect for any occasion, but still works extremely well on rainy nights. Another interesting love story that has World War II implications, make sure to check this one out, not just on a rainy night.
