Jane Austen is one of literature's most prominent women, her work has lasted centuries and will last centuries to come. Austen's most popular book, Pride and Prejudice has been adapted 13 times in film and television and has been expanded in more books than one can count.
The following list is a gathering of four movies that are not Pride and Prejudice.
1. Clueless
If you can get past the first 40 minutes of this film then you're in for a treat, I was shocked at how much I actually enjoyed this film. Based on Shannon Hale's book by the same name, this Keri Russel-headed-film centers around a women who is obsessed with the world of Pride and Prejudice. After failing at another relationship, she heads to a themed vacation at Austenland, a British resort where you are immersed in the culture of the Regency era and the idealistic romance of a Jane Austen book.
3. Love & Friendship
Seeing as I drove an hour to see this in theaters after reading glowing reviews, I expected highly of this film and it delivered. The cast is amazing, beautiful and funny. This is the first Jane Austen movie I have ever laughed at. The movie is an adaption of Austen's Lady Susan, a story of a relatively young widow, Lady Susan, as she tries to make a match for both herself and her daughter. Everything about this film I love.
4. Pride and Prejudice and Zombies
Despite the title, I really don't count this as an adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, as the characters are more tough and some of the story lines have greatly changed. At first the only reason I saw this was because of Lily James, who was one of my favorite cast members on Downton, so seeing her as Lizzie Bennet in this film excited me more than it probably should have. But as I watched the movie I found myself liking it. The (literally) killer Bennet sisters made this movie worthwhile.
This movie is also jammed packed with other stars that I like: Matt Smith, Jack Huston and Lena Headey. The movie is an adaption of the book Pride Prejudice and Zombies by Seth Grahame-Smith, however it has been changed to portray the zombies in a more intelligent light than they are seen in the book. But let me get this straight— I hate zombie movies and avoid horror movies. In fact, I find most to be offensive and boring. However this movie helped me over look my aversion to zombies and focus on the story line the zombies actually ended up enhancing.
