Going to a movie theater to see a film will never disenchant me. As I see so many theaters struggling to stay afloat and big production companies suffering to stay relevant, I just wonder what people do or appreciate more than a movie. Every aspect of going to the movie theater excites me: the joy of buying a ticket at the counter, the slight anxiety when you walk into the theater and turn the corner to the seats hoping there's still good ones, the over buttery popcorn, the sugary drinks, the movie trailers that, for me, never last long enough, the dimming of the lights signaling the start of the movie, I never get board of any of this.
To stay an important spot for entertainment theaters have revamped themselves with cushy seats, bars, flashy decor, soda machines that have 100+ flavors, all so that people are more "wow'd" and feel that excitement of coming to the movies once again. With the revamping though theaters have had to charge more for tickets, prices that a lot of people are turned off by. I, for one, don't need a fancy theater. I personally enjoy the older ones more, they have more charm and have been thoroughly enjoyed for decades without needing to change too drastically. I appreciate the less lavish seats that sometimes squeak, the 5 options of pop, the traditional candy, having to work to sneak my alcohol in with my purse, I don't need an updated theater to enjoy a movie.
I truly think the second our movies can only be watched online through our subscriptions with Netflix our society and future generations will be lost. They won't be able know the classic enjoyment of going to a theater to watch a movie that's been anticipated for months. There is magic produced on those screens, a lot of which younger generations just don't appreciate. It's truly sad. I hate that production companies have to fight to keep up to date with effects to keep people interested and entertained instead of focusing on an original plot and a riveting story. Our society just doesn't love the movies like they should.
The movie theatre is where so many people had their first date, first kiss. It's a staple in our society and I don't think newer generations respect that. The excitement of making it to the theatre to get good seats is no longer there because in a couple months they can just watch the movie on their phones or find it illegally on the Internet right now. I would rather see a movie the way it was meant to be seen, the way the artists behind the movie wanted it to be seen. I don't mind being cramped into a theater that's sometimes dusty or rather, nowadays, empty.
I go to a movie almost every week. I see everything I want to see, anything that seems relevant, anything that's fun, and even movies I believe could be the next Oscar winners. I sit in my old theater, with its old seats, old concessions, and old walls (that resemble an Italian restaurant) and I continue to enjoy and be enchanted by what others have forgotten about.
