Impactful, thrilling, thought-provoking, heartfelt, compelling – these are only a few words worthy to describe this movie.
If you are sick of the classic overplayed movies that constantly play throughout the theatres with only slight plot changes than this is the movie you need to see.
To summarize the plot, "Starr" is the main character of the film, she is a young high school aged girl who is caught between her poor "black" neighborhood where she lives and her rich "white" private school. Being torn between the two communities naturally, she is even more destroyed when her childhood best friend is innocently shot in front of her. This reminds us that you never truly know an individual. "Starr" spends the majority of the film only showing one side of herself.
The film unravels to show the growth Starr has to overcome to handle both sides of the community and stand up for what she believes. The character is stunningly performed by "Amandla Stenberg", whom many may remember from other works such as "Rue" in The Hunger Games.
This is an important movie to see because of just how much perspective it brings. It demonstrates the importance of family and how a community can come together to make something big happen. It provokes thoughts on police brutality, racism, social class systems, gun violence, and many other important issues. It is loving, caring, tragic, realistic, human, and every side of every issue seems to be revealed.
The Hate U Give opens the audience's eyes to the realities of the world we live. These issues are often forgotten, overlooked or assumed gone since we have technically moved past segregation. If you are anything like me the subtle truths shown throughout the fill will have your eyes opening and shedding multiple tears throughout the process.
