To all those Peter Pan fans out there, I have great news: There is a new Peter Pan movie out, and it is definitely one that you should be interested in watching! This movie, "Pan," is about the origin story of Peter Pan and how he became the boy we have learned to love. This movie really dives into how this young boy got to Neverland and met all of the characters that we are used to seeing in the classic Disney movie. As a self-proclaimed biggest fan of the Peter Pan stories, I was extremely excited when I heard that this movie was coming out. I have always loved learning more and more about the boy who never grew up, and this movie would answer all of my questions! Following the really pretty picture of the cast below is a spoiler-ridden review of the movie. Read on, fellow Lost Boys.
This was a great movie! It was awesome to see another live action version of what Peter Pan might have looked like if he wasn't a cartoon drawing. I always loved seeing what Peter would have looked like in all of the live action remakes. Levi Miller, the young boy who played Peter, was an excellent actor (not to mention a cutie pie). His portrayal of Peter Pan was absolutely amazing. He definitely captured Peter Pan's essence in a really great way. It made the character really come to life. One of the best live action Peter Pans I've seen yet. Hugh Jackman, who played Blackbeard, was also a great addition to the story. Blackbeard was the bad guy of the film. He definitely played an amazing bad guy and was very convincing as a pirate lord. It was a great experience to see Hugh Jackman in another really intense role. He was an excellent introduction to how Neverland was before Peter got there to fix it up into the Neverland that we are used to now. Garrett Hedlund, who played Hook (more affectionately known as Captain Hook), was an amazing portrayal of a young Captain Hook. He was a really lovable character that really made you hope he would turn out to be a good guy to be with Peter for a long time to follow. He was a great addition to the origin story. Not to mention Smee, played by Adeel Akhtar! His portrayal of the lovable pirate sidekick was amazing. One of the best parts of the movie was watching him capture the lovable character of Smee.
Besides the amazing cast for this movie, the soundtrack was absolutely amazing. It really captured the mood and the adventure that was brought out through the movie. The soundtrack really brought you into the movie where the plot may have slowed down. The other part of the movie that was absolutely astounding was the scenery. This movie was a cinematically beautiful movie. The artwork and the CGI were ridiculously amazing. It had me enthralled the entire time.
The only problem I had with the movie is that it left a lot of questions still unanswered, which, unfortunately, was the whole reason a lot of people would want to go see this movie. The movie didn't answer what happened between Peter and Hook to make them enemies. It also didn't definitively answer who the lost boys were (even though it did hint towards it). Also, how Hook lost his hand wasn't shown, however that could have just been because of its PG rating. Another downside is that it seemed the directors changed the age/race of Tiger Lily. In the original movies and in the book, Tiger Lily was a young, (around the same age as Peter) Native American girl. In the movie, she was an older (around the same age as Captain Hook) white woman. Rooney Mara played Tiger Lily in a great light, but it was just a little shocking to see that much of a difference from the original stories and this movie.
This movie is definitely one that you should see whether you like the Peter Pan story or not, solely because of the beautiful nature of the movie. It is also not very scary so young children should be able to watch it with no problem. As someone who absolutely loves the Peter Pan franchise, I definitely cannot wait for this move to come out on DVD so I can add it to my collection. If you have the chance, definitely go out to see it!
