Warning: the following article may contain spoilers from Lionsgate Movies latest release, La Land Land, starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone.
This inspiring, infuriating musical was released less than a month ago, and has already received seven Golden Globe nominations, was voted Best Film by New York Film Critics Circle Awards, and have been noticed by many more organizations with more information to be found on the La La Land website.
The film is different than most being as it is a musical, but the same unexpected romance, thrill, and passion is still prominent in the plot surrounding an aspiring actress and passionate Jazz musician/enthusiast. A few quick run-ins with a sexy stranger soon turned into an extravagant romance that took off running and lit itself on fire.
The individual journeys that the main characters followed made the movie extremely relatable. Any viewer can take the failure and frustration from Emma Stone’s character, Mia, as she tries audition after audience and works part-time in a coffee shop as her dreams are literally in sight, only to be successful at the very end of the movie.
Ryan Gosling’s character, Sebastian, has a love for traditional Jazz music, and has a dream to open his own restaurant that stays true to old-time Jazz, though he finds himself straying from his path and compromising something that once meant so much to him. He eventually finds his way in his career, though his personal life never gets a happy ending.
The musical numbers that randomly erupt during the movie, as well as the entertaining and graceful dance moves, all add to the emphasis on the passion that everyone in Los Angeles has for music and acting. It makes the audience want to join in and burst out in song.
Between the pure love and the obvious attraction, the director chose to demonstrate the intimacy through dance and song, and not one sex scene takes place throughout the film. Aside from foul language being used, the movie is honest, clean, true, and is worth seeing for anyone who does not mind a few songs to exemplify the deeper meaning of the relationship developments and the plot.
I give this musical a solid 9 out of 10, missing that one point due to the physical ache that was inflicted on my heart as the movie came to an invigorating end.
After all, nothing is more painful than knowing that the love you feel is reciprocated, but there is nothing that can be done or acted upon. As sad as it may be, some things simply just cannot be.
Aside from that one downfall, La La Land is one of the greatest films to reach the theaters in the recent years. For a better sense of what La Land Land is about, check out the trailer.
