I am not a big movie fan. It is not one of my interests to watch movies. However, a movie we watched in AP language, Dead Poets Society, was one that really made me really reflect on modern day life. For people interested in watching this movie, I will give a brief summary and review of the plot.
This movie is a story about five teenagers who are sent to a boarding school to study and then learn about a different way of looking at life. The parents of these kids are all very strict. In their english class, they meet a teacher by the name of John Keating (played by Robin Williams) who does not teach the curricula the school demands; instead, he tries to teach them to be free thinkers. This pushes these kids to recreate a poetry type club where they try to discover themselves. One kid, by the name of Neal, has a passion for acting, but his dad is very stern and does not allow him to pursue his passion for acting. Even after, he tries to tell his dad about his passion as Mr. Keating tells him to do so, but his dad objects and takes him out of the school. This leads to ultimate suicide and Mr. Keating's firing. However, at the end as Mr. Keating gets his stuff from the classroom, all the students stand of their desk and salute him at the objection of the teacher.
The movie is a great movie to help understand the dangers of both realism and abstract thinking. The late great Robin Williams did an amazing job as the teacher who tries to teach the students a different angle of looking at life. The way the director chose to end this movie, with the kid dying, the teacher getting fired and the kids saluting him, as opposed to a happy ending where the kid gets to love out his dream, shows the importance of balance between realism and romanticism. I would rate this movie as a 10 out of 10 because it made me stop in my tracks and think about life in a different way, and I absolutely recommend it to anyone interested in watching.
