A couple of friends and I had a pretty good argument after seeing Rogue One, the latest Star Wars installment. Now, I'm not a huge Star Wars fan, but I thought the movie was really good compared to The Force Awakens. One of my friends however, thought that the storyline and the characters were too flat and nothing really caught their eye while my other friend though it was genius. That was probably because the story introduced such new characters and planets, it is so hard to take it all in- while The Force Awakens bombards nostalgia and expecting people to like it... and guess what? They do.
In this day and age, we are constantly fed the same content whether it be from social media, movies, and entertainment. The weird thing is that we're accepting it.The movie makers and developers know our tendencies and are taking advantage of it; that is why there are so many sequels being created or remastered. The people, the consumers love nostalgia. They love being reminded of the day they were introduced to something so great. There are so many Marvel movies every year and no matter how good or bad it is, we continue to watch it. I also fall into this trap, especially when it comes to Harry Potter. I love Harry Potter.
If you have not seen the newest addition to the Harry Potter family, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, I would have to say that I was quite disappointed, however, I did not realize my disappointment until sometime after. I noticed that while watching the movie, I was forcing myself to like it depite how slow-placed the movie was. I was finding excuses to call this movie great all because it was tied to the great Harry Potter series.
All the developers have to think is, "Alright, as long as we have some references from what people already know, they will like it." It is crazy to think how much money they profit from the consumers. All the millions are going towards towards the actors and editing. Not much for securing a intricate storyline.
This doesn't just tie into movies, but the whole creative and entertainment industry. There are so many photographers taking the same types of photos and inspiring many others to take the same as well. Even the education system, teaching people the same thing that it is so hard to branch off and be unique. However, I can say that by being so desaturated from the same things everyday, when stumbled upon something new, it is a great feeling.
I am not putting the blame on the consumers or the producers, but the cycle that allows this to happen. Habits are the common enemy and when we realize something is off, we must all be together for change, no matter now big or small.
