I don’t know about you guys, but sometimes I’m just in the mood to cry. I don’t like crying though, so getting my eyes to … leak ... takes a lot of effort.
Here’s a list of 10 movies; these movies present situations or feelings we've all been in before. Choose one when you're in "that mood," and cry away.
1. When growing up and fitting in is hard, dealing with your past is hard, and just ... being is hard.
Naturally, I’m going to say "The Perks of Being a Wallflower." It tells the story of Charlie, a high school freshman, as he learns how to get through life and school and make friends while dealing with other internal struggles … something we all can relate to, even if they aren't as dramatic as Charlie’s. (Logan Lerman and Emma Watson are in it. Ezra Miller too. Let’s just say I could pause the movie and just watch their beautiful faces for hours).
2. When you feel like you've made a lot of bad choices in life and you’re also hopelessly in love
"13 Going on 30" is my pick for this one. I always watch it when I feel like I'm trying to grow up to fast (or feel that I did grow up too fast). It reminds me to stay true to myself and the people around me that truly love me, because in the end, that's all that we have. Excuse my sappiness. This has also been one of my favorite movies for years. It came out when I was 10 and very impressionable.
Disclaimer: It's the romance in this movie that makes me wail. Results may vary.
3. When you’re feeling nostalgic.
"Toy Story 3." We've all read about that rumor that Pixar purposefully waited 12 years or whatever to put out this movie to show that the toys/Andy grew with us, and that we're older and in college now, blah blah. It's a good throwback to childhood while simultaneously reminding you that we're not kids anymore. And it sucks. And this is where you cry.
4. When people keep trying to bring you down.
"Cyberbully." Bullying sucks. Don't do it. Words hurt. They affect people whether it's in person or online, and you may not know how much it's really affecting them until it's too late.
I understand this is an ABC original movie or whatever, but don't underestimate it. It's so powerful.
5. When you feel trapped. Scared. Withdrawn.
This movie, "Short Term 12," is just so intense. It shows the life of troubled teens in a safe home and the struggles that they face everyday, as well as the struggles of the ones that are overseeing and mentoring them. If it's really hard for you to communicate what you're feeling or why you're feeling that way, this is a good movie to watch. So touching.
6. When you want to be a complete wreck and cry over people who shouldn’t have died.
"The Fault in Our Stars." Do I even need an explanation for this one? Even if you don't know anyone that has cancer or is dying of a terminal illness (or dying at all), we can definitely relate to the intense feeling that is love.
I will state once more: results may vary. I know a lot of people (boys) that aren't touched by this movie (or the book) at all. I genuinely don't understand.
7. When love is absolutely and completely hard.
"Stuck in Love." Sometimes parents get divorced. Sometimes you fall in love with someone that's completely wrong for you. Sometimes you fall in love with someone that's so right for you, but you push them so so far away to the point where they can't get near your heart.
Sometimes love is completely and utterly hard, and this is what that movie is about (along with following your dreams, what you're good at, etc).
8. When you just want to watch something completely and utterly depressing and messed up.
Warning: this movie does not a happy ending and will probably leave you paralyzed in your chair/couch/bed with a tear stained face. It's called "Chatroom." It's about all the different battles in life. The "Chatroom" is an escape from all of that. It teaches how there can be one person that's absolutely poisonous to you. There's way more to it than that, but I just ... it's too much.
Disclaimer: This movie is graphic and can be very triggering for a lot of people dealing with subjects like depression, self harm, etc. The British have no chill when they make their films, I guess.
9. When you need closure about something.
"P.S. I Love You." I suppose this is back to cheesy/sappy, but nothing screams closure like your dead husband helping you get through his death and back out into the world. It shows me that love has no time restraints or limits. It truly is everlasting. Accepting. Ugh.
10. When you’re angry at all the bad things happening in the world.
"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas." This is another one that doesn't even need an explanation. There's definitely a lot of messed up things happening in the world right now, side note.
Happy (sad) crying.
