My boyfriend and I have been together for almost 5 years now. Even though we have been in a relationship for a long time, though, I'm finding there are a few things I didn't know since we moved in together.
Here are 13 things you'll learn about your significant other once you move in together — I know I sure did:
They don't make the bed every morning.
I was raised to make the bed every morning. However, my boyfriend was not, so he... does not. I don't even know if he realizes I make the bed every morning yet.
They are only used to certain chores.
Both my boyfriend and I did different chores growing up. He took out the trash and mowed the lawn. I did laundry and cleaned. For the most part, those are the chores we've each continued doing since moving in with each other.
They don't pick up after themself.
I try my best to put everything away where it belongs after I use it, however, my boyfriend doesn't do that. I prefer coats go in the coat closet and not hang on the chair in the dining room. He looks at it as he's going to use it again so why not just leave it there. The same applies to his house slippers.
They have a very different decor style.
For us, our styles didn't really clash too much (thankfully). I had to work around some deer heads hanging on the walls, but luckily it goes with our "rustic" style. But when it comes to buying furniture and decorations, it's harder when two people have to agree on it. Just to buy a couch, my boyfriend had to sit on each one in different positions till he could agree on one.
They take their coffee differently.
In my family's house, we transitioned to a Keurig when they came out. In Josh's, they stuck with the pot. I see benefits in both, but because of my early schedule, just popping in a k-cup is much easier than brewing a whole pot. Luckily, Keurig makes a two-in-one coffee maker!
You'll have to get used to waking each other up since you'll have different schedules.
My boyfriend and I usually go to sleep at the same time. On my workdays, I get up earlier than him so sometimes I wake him up at 4 am. He works on Sundays so he wakes me up when he gets up.
You buy different things at the grocery store.
My boyfriend and I have learned to agree on the same foods. At first, it was a little hard to figure out what to buy and what fits in our budget.
They don't hang all of their clothes.
My boyfriend hangs his "nice" T-shirts and folds his "not so nice" T-shirts. I'm learning that the difference between those two categories is minimal...
You have to work through your arguments because you have few places to escape.
Before, when we would start bickering, one of us would just go home. Now we live in the same house and there's no escaping.
They might not want the thermostat set to the same temperature.
Luckily, we could agree on how we set the thermostat, but I know plenty of couples who don't agree.
They hog the bed.
Between my boyfriend and my dog, I get absolutely no room in the bed.
They cook their favorite things for you.
Luckily, my boyfriend and I can both cook pretty well. He knows how to cook some things better than I do and vice versa.
The best part of your day becomes going home to them.
No matter what kind of day I'm having, coming home to my boyfriend always makes me happy.
