10 Move-In Day Nightmares That College Students Aren't Looking Forward To

In This Article:

Move-in day is just around the corner and it's time to say goodbye to your parents, dog, work-life and focus on being a student again. It's time to get back into the swing of things and get used to waking up to an alarm, going to class, and most importantly, setting up your room....again. Whether you're a freshman or a senior, move-in day isn't as glamorous as it sounds. In fact, it's one of the most stressful and overwhelming days of college. Here's a few things to refresh your memory:

1. Last minute packing on the DAY OF.

Giphy

Trust me, there's always those FIVE things you suddenly forget that needed to be packed. Your family is waiting for you in the car and your suitcase is about to explode. At this point, you just tell yourself, "I'll come back and get it Thanksgiving," or "My mom will just mail it to me." It's usually a toothbrush or a piece of clothing in the dryer. Trust me, we've all been there on move-in day. Forgetting to pack your toothbrush is common because you need it THAT morning.

2. Finding a good parking spot. Well, finding ANY parking spot.

Giphy

If you are able to get a good parking spot in front of your residence hall/apartment, how does it feel to be God's favorite? It doesn't matter if you arrive at 9AM, you will NEVER get a spot. If you do, you'll be walking in the hot sun 20 blocks away. It's also annoying because there are people walking around you and you have to be careful. I know, it's worse than a NYC jaywalker. If it helps, I would still try to get there early and even purchase a cart of your own, which leads me to my next nightmare.

3. Waiting hours in line just to get a cart.

Giphy

Waiting for a blue or red cart is one of the most frustrating things any college student can go through. It's even harder because there's only like 15 and there's 500 students per residence hall that are trying to move in all at once. Did I mention it's HOT?

4. Having to go though 10 move-in day checkpoint stations.

Giphy

It takes 30 minutes of processing just to get to the elevator. You know, having to give them your name, getting your ID sticker, being told what room you're in, getting your keys and then going to another station to get your room evaluation. Oh yeah, and any medical forms. You do all of that and then wait for the elevators for another 30 minutes.

5. Driving to your school is a nightmare because traffic is unavoidable.

Giphy

We all know the anticipation and the long dreadful drive to your campus. You are so excited to move in and get there first. However, HUNDREDS of other students are on the I-95 going to the same place. Girl you better floor it.

6. The elevators to get to your floor take forever (because of those carts).

Giphy

The elevators can only hold two people (if you are both carrying carts) and its very frustrating waiting in line to move in. Not only that, there are people waiting to come DOWN the elevator. It's a whole mess. The sad thing is that you will definitely be making more than one trip.

7. Finally getting to your dorm/apartment and not knowing where to start.

Giphy

You finally moved in. Now what? I don't know what is worse; unpacking your things or going through the check-in process. You are still out of breath from hauling your belongings to your floor and you don't know where to start. Instead, you either fool around and take photos and admire your new place or you just start chatting with your roommate(s) and not do a damn thing until midnight.

(Side note: 90% of people do their room first [such as: wall decor, furniture, bedding] and their clothes last! Putting away your clothes takes the longest.)

8. Navigating past your roommate(s), who also has their stuff all over the place

Giphy

If you are sharing a room with your roommate, it's a disaster when the BOTH of you guys are unpacking at the same time. Sometimes, stuff will overlap and it is super confusing. Try your best to keep all of your things at one side. If you are moving into an apartment and have groceries, take turns putting your groceries in.

9. Knowing that you'll be taking multiple trips and doing what I said all over again.

Giphy

I think this is the most annoying part of moving in. Especially if you are parked far away and the place is crowded. If you have belongings in a storage unit, it may be even harder.

If you need to give the front desk your Student ID for 1 cart, try asking them if you can use your driver's license too so you can use 2 carts. However, since carts are high in demand, this probably won't be an option.

10. Getting your parents to LEAVE

Giphy

Your parents will try to hang around for an extra 2 hours after you brought in all of your stuff. They will socialize with your friends, lay on your couch, ask to help you decorate your room, and will probably show you some baby pictures while they're at it. Your parents love you and they will be very lonely once they drop you off. Besides, you'll probably call them tomorrow about a problem. Just let them stay. they're paying for this.

New year, new semester, not the same old thing. This semester will be a semester to redeem all the mistakes made in the previous five months.

1. I will wake up (sorta) on time for class.

Let's face it, last semester you woke up with enough time to brush your teeth and get to class and even then you were about 10 minutes late and rollin' in with some pretty unfortunate bed head. This semester we will set our alarms, wake up with time to get ready, and get to class on time!

And so it begins.

1. Walk in motivated and ready to rock

Camping out at the library is not for the faint of heart. You need to go in as a warrior. You usually have brought supplies (laptop, chargers, and textbooks) and sustenance (water, snacks, and blanket/sweatpants) since the battle will be for an undetermined length of time. Perhaps it is one assignment or perhaps it's four. You are motivated and prepared; you don’t doubt the assignment(s) will take time, but you know it couldn’t be that long.

December... it's full of finals, due dates, Mariah Carey, and the holidays. It's the worst time of the year, but the best because after finals, you get to not think about classes for a month and catch up on all the sleep you lost throughout the semester. But what's worse than finals week is the last week of classes, when all the due dates you've put off can no longer be put off anymore.
