10 Reasons The Mountains Are Better Than The Beach

It's not that I hate the beach, it's just that I love the mountains more.

I know what you are thinking: "How can she be this crazy? The beach is the best." And let me clarify-- I do enjoy the beach. The food is wonderful, and hearing the waves at night while you drift of to sleep is priceless. But, as you are about to read below, I will give you ten reasons why (in my personal opinion) vacationing at the mountains is so much better.

1. There is no sand.

Let's face it: who enjoys discovering sand three weeks later when you are showering and discover grains of it still stuck in your head? I know I do not. And I will not even begin on the other places it can hide.

2. The mountains have snow.

I know this may seem like a con for many, but for this southern gal who can count the number of times she has seen a genuine snow on one hand, it is simply marvelous.

3. And with snow, comes snowboarding.

As an adernaline junkie and snow lover, there is nothing like riding so fast down a hill that you knock someone out and proceed to fall straight on your back (not that I have any personal experience in this or anything).

4. The amazing scenery.

As great as ocean views are, there is nothing like watching the sun set between the mountains.

5. No sea creatures.

Even though I would rather not come into contact with a bear, I would much rather not have a higher chance of getting eaten by (or even seeing) a shark. Maybe that is just a personal thing.

6. Hiking trips.

There are typically multiple trails you can conquer, and each are beautiful in their own way. And there is nothing like the feeling that overcomes you when you have accomplished said trail(s)!

Less humidity.

As a curly headed person, this is a major plus. Enough said.

8. Campfires and smores.

Of course, you can have these things at the beach, but at the mountains you get the true camping experience.

9. Less crowds.

As a person who dislikes crowds on every level, spending time at the mountains is a great way to avoid all the anxiety that can come with navigating through crowds of party people.

10. No need for a "beach body".

Because under all the layers of clothes you need to stay warm, you will not have to worry about burning off your muffin top.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
