Mother Knows Best

Gosh, is this woman ever wrong?

21
Mother Knows Best

When you were younger you always got annoyed with your mom because she was always on your a** about every little thing you did. She made sure that you were prepared for every place you went and reminded you everyday about something that was happening in a week. Yes, it was repetitive, but in the end she was always right. Here is a list of things that mom was and still is always right about.

1. Bring a sweater everywhere you go

It's 100 degrees outside and every place we went my mom would make me take a sweater. She would say, it's always air conditioned in the restaurant, movie theater, etc. It seemed she was always right. Whenever I didn't listen, I would end up freezing my butt off the entire time.

2. Eat a good breakfast

Eating a good breakfast makes you energized and ready for the day. This is true because every time I was in a rush and didn't eat that morning my day was just dull. I would come home exhausted and my mom would tell me it's because I didn't have a healthy breakfast.

3. Ignore the rude girls

My mom always said ,"The rude girls are snotty because they are just jealous of what you have going for you". I never truly believed this one until I started high school. It is completely true and you cannot let people like this ruin your happiness. Just keep 'blockin' out the haters'.

4. Kill them with kindness

Killing people with kindness is the best medicine. They can't continue to hate someone that is just so kind to everyone. It gets under their skin and you're just happily smiling at them and there isn't anything they can do about it. They realize that being rude isn't going to affect you.

5. Take your vitamins daily

Each day my mom would make me take my vitamins because according to her it'll prevent you from getting sick. I can't really prove this one yet, but since she was right about everything else, I am almost positive she is right about this one as well.

6. Don't grow up too fast

When in high school all you can think about is being in college. Then college came and now you begin to worry about the real world. My mother always told me to enjoy life and don't rush into becoming an adult. Now, I am a junior and I wish I was a freshman all over again. She's right...what's new?

7. When you loan your clothes out, make sure to get them back ASAP

She always said to make a list of what friend has borrowed what. I never did and I would never get any clothes back. Still to this day, I lose clothing items. I definitely need to work on this one.

8. The bad boys will always be bad

You can't change a boy. If they are bad news stay away because you'll only get a broken heart in the end. My mom always said nice guys shouldn't finish last.

This list is only a couple of the things that moms are always right about. I learned that listening to your mother will take you furthest in life. This is because she went through the same struggles you are going through. She has experienced everything we have; therefore we need to appreciate the things she does for us and remember that mothers do know best.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
