Here's To You

It’s the only mother-daughter relationship I know.

Here's To You

“Because of you, I never stray too far from the sidewalk.”

Imagine this: a mother and daughter bond like no other. Their relationship is built on strength, trust, and compassion. They have been each other’s best friend from the very beginning. It’s the only mother daughter relationship they know, a relationship that will last forever.

The year is 2004 and a warm, sunny summer day is coming to an end. I am done playing for the day, I’ve showered, and I’m ready for bed. Just like any other eight year old, I still have a little energy left in me before bedtime. I beg and plead my mom to let us listen to our favorite song until I fall asleep.

As I crawl into my big and comfy bed after a long day in the sun, my mom tucks me in and sits on the edge of the bed. After talking about our “high points and low points” of the day (a time where we reflect on the good things that happened that day and the bad), she gets up to turn on the CD player.

The lyrics to Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” start to fill the dimly lit room. Too young to realize what the song was actually about (now that I’m older and going through life experiences, I have a whole new appreciation for the song), my mom and I hum the lyrics as I drift off to sleep.

When I look back on my childhood bedroom, the flower wallpaper, cold hardwood floor, or big craft desk do not carry nearly as much weight in memories. The memory I cherish the most from that bedroom is establishing a tight-knit relationship with the most influential person in my life. The person who took time to invest in me from a young age, to ensure I grew up into an independent, loving, and determined lady.

Each night, my mom took the time out of her day to tuck me into bed and spend quality time with me.

Each night, she taught me the importance of recognizing the good and bad things that happen in life. She taught me how to appreciate those moments and recognize the bigger picture of them.

Each night, my mom instilled confidence and security in my world. Even when I was too young to realize, she was teaching me how to be independent and strong.

So here’s to you mom, my best friend, and my person. Thank you for providing me with security, comfort, and love. Thank you for playing the role of a parent, friend, and businesswoman. Thank you for teaching me the importance of family and how to take care of myself.

Because of you, I am strong.

Because of you, I am independent.

Because of you, I am loved.

Because of you, I am here.

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
