With me, I have my books and my worn bag
I stroll along the Academic Mall
With my headphones in my external ears
I walk along the Zebra Path to gorge
East Side Dining is bustling with hubbub
I slide my card and I take my fair fill
I record my calorie count for aim
Class is about to begin, I should run
Is that assignment due for today's class?
The grade for it will count toward our final grade
The blank verse is a poetic form that is written in iambic pentamer with alternating stressed and unstressed syllables and does not have a proper rhyme scheme. The specific number of lines that a blank verse can have is limitless but the one I wrote above contains 10 lines. The style of the blank verse was copied by Shakespearean equals which lead to the loose use by less skilled writers.
The blank verse was commonly used with John Milton throughout his epic poem "Paradise Lost." In most of "Paradise Lost," most of the words like "heav'n" are shortened in order to preserve the rhythm of the blank verse. This certain style of poetry did fade into obscurity, but it led to new possibilities when it comes to versification.
