You Need To Do More Of What Makes You Happy

The little things matter.

Everyone in life is looking for their purpose or what makes them happy to make life much more worth while. That search does not truly start until you leave the home at the ripe age of eighteen and realize that there is a lot more to living besides just waking up, going to school, hanging out with friends, spending time with your family, etc. We grow up thinking that life is that simple. In reality, things are much easier when we are littler. Our lives are based upon doing the things we like to do balanced with the things we have to. However, majority of the time we just do the things that we enjoy most.

So, what changes? We grow older and we clutter our lives with negative things. We forget the skill that we had as a child and conform to the idea of "dealing" with the pessimistic things that make us unhappy. We place ourselves in the situation to be surrounded by people we do not necessarily care for, in situations that are negative that we could easily avoid, or do things we thoroughly just do not enjoy. It is a given that we do not always have the option that we can remove every little thing from our lives that are negative but, we could do a better job of it.

After several months of letting myself do exactly that and let pessimism surround me, I had come to find that my quality of life did not seem that great. I made the active decision to change my life by choosing to do more of what makes me happy and less of what does not. I still did what I had to do but I also came to find a balance in my life so I could have both what I had to do and what I wanted to do.

In this life, you are only allotted a very specific amount of time in this life and even that can be cut off by a couple days, months, or even years. So why do we waste our time? We get so caught up in the craziness of life that we do not realize that life is much more worth while when we get to do things that we enjoy. Instead of taking that extra hour arguing with someone, take a walk with your best friend. Instead of working that extra shift, spend the day with your mom because you only get so many minutes with her anyway. You can even skip out on the salad every once and awhile and have a cookie because I know they sure make me happy.

At the end of the day, the best people you will ever meet are the happiest of people. Strive for that.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
