Moral relativism is the belief that morality changes with society. In modern society, this is the philosophy that is becoming most widely accepted. This philosophy suggests that morality is subjective to culture and is the friendliest of the philosophies. It is easy to fall under this belief, society pushes the boundaries of morality and expects them to conform to their standard. However, when morality pushes back society feels aggrieved. This is the double standard phenomenon that we see today of a society that hates the non-conformists and is insulted by any strongly voiced deviation from their own beliefs.
Morality cannot be based on surrounding circumstances. It is a common misconception that as the world progresses morals have to be updated. When in reality, morality does not need to be updated it just has to be applied to the new circumstances. Just like water does not stop pushing when it is meant with an unmovable object but goes around it and continues on its course. Morality does not change in essence when it is faced with society, it remains true to its itself.
Now, you may ask yourself, what is moral? How do I find my morality? Every decision that you make internally of what is right or wrong will lead you down a path. The key part of this is the decision you make. If you make a decision based on the way you feel then you are going against the old adage that says to think with your head and not your heart. Yes, emotions cannot be cut out completely but when your emotions have led you down dark paths before maybe its time you stopped trusting in them. Morality requires looking to the future and thinking of what will become of you and what repercussion will ensue because of your impending decision.
Emotional decision making encourages you to make a decision on what will make you the happiest, wise decision making is making a decision that will take you be the person that the world needs. As the world goes farther and farther down this dark path it is of utmost importance to understand the power of decision and the willingness to be uncomfortable. Not doing something because it makes you uncomfortable is not a good enough reason to back out anymore. Being easily swayed never was and never will be an admirable attribute. Morality, ethics, and a life built on biblical principle is what will lead you down a path that you can be proud of. When you look back and remember all the times that you were able to make yourself uncomfortable and didn’t bend to social pressures. The double standard has to stop, be who you say you are and apply it to every situation no matter how uncomfortable it is.
