It has been nearly one month since Louisiana was rocked by a Historic Flood, and we are slowly starting to get back into a normal routine. But things will never be normal for many people again. I was one of the 'ten percent,' which basically means that my house did not flood. But, unfortunately for a lot of other people, that was not the case. Over 10,000 homes were damaged in my hometown of Denham Springs. Livingston Parish was one of the hardest hit areas; with officials estimating that 75% of the homes in the parish were a "total loss." And though people should be getting relief from FEMA, it is still not enough. You see, FEMA will only help the citizens a little bit. And even if you lost everything, FEMA can still deny you just because you make too much money! Now, if you can prove that your home got flooded and that you lost all of your belongings, then I feel that you should some support.
But unfortunately, there are some who are trying to scam FEMA in order to get money from the government. This is most likely why many people are getting denied assistance. According to officials, it will take more than a year to get everything rebuilt. This includes businesses, homes and everything else. Did you know that the Walmart in Denham Springs got over seven feet of water? They don't think that they'll be open before 2017 starts, unless they get lucky. The same goes for Denham Springs High School. They got so much water that they are going to have to practically rebuild the school. Because of this, students will now be attending Live Oak High School (my high school) which affects the schedules as well.
All in all, we just keep looking ahead. Because we know that the future will be great!
