How Money Affects Job Choice

The disappointing correlation between money and choosing a job.

Green, 2.61x6.14 inches, with a president’s face on it… What’s that? That’s cash. Money that controls everything and anything about us. It controls how much we travel, the things we have, the cars we drive, absolutely everything. Therefore, money also manages to control our career decisions. Even if someone's deepest passion is art, there is an unlikelihood they won’t pursue that field because of the fear of money in that field. This where I feel as if the world is very, very wrong…

Passion is what drives who we are, passion makes us work hard in what we do, and passion makes us love everything we do. If you are the world’s best Broadway performer but rather than doing that you chose finance because of the stability, there is a mistake. We could be missing out on incredible dancers, artists, photographers, because of the thought that money might affect us. If you have some passion deep down that you think there is a chance you can make it, I encourage you to take that opportunity. It might be difficult, but I promise it will be worth it.

When I am 50 years old and look back at my life, I would like to know that I at least tried. Would you rather live a lifetime of what if’s and what could have been or know that you at least tried? I want to know that I at least tried to pursue my dreams and everything I can become.

The thought of unknowing what you could/could have done would kill me. At least try. Everything can’t work out perfectly, that’s just not fathomable. Although trying and knowing something wasn’t for you, at least you know. I’d rather die trying that to achieve my passion versus not knowing everything I could have been.

If you really don’t full-heartedly love your career, are you going to give it your all? Are you going to wake up in the morning excited to work? There is a good chance that that answer is a no. Although if you love what you are doing then you’ll wake up happy. You will come to work anxious and excited to learn more things about your occupation. Working hard will not feel like you are “working.” Thirty percent of a person's life is spent working, why not enjoy every last minute of that experience rather than dreading it?

As you're getting older and getting a job, your journey can either come to an end or continue to blossom throughout your life...You can find a career that doesn’t interest you or you can chose something that allows you to grow more and more everyday. Let your passion drive you into a career that you will love. Don’t spend your life regretting your career choice. At least give your dreams the best shot you can so you can at least say you tried. It might be hard, but I promise it will be more than worth it.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
