Mondays Deserve Love, Too

A day to rejoice about.

Monday, such a seemingly unfriendly word that many cringe at as the thought of this day approaches. Why does it receive such a poor reputation? Maybe because it puts an end to our time off, marking the day that responsibility returns and classes or work must be attended? Truth is, it would be hard to appreciate any day that had this job. However, if Monday was a common part of our weekend it might finally be accepted and even embraced. Sadly, this is not the case, but that does not mean Mondays should be hated. In actuality, humanity needs to cut Monday some slack! There are many beneficial aspects to Mondays, especially in comparison to the other days that follow. Society may not notice the good the beginning can bring because they are too busy mourning the "end of an era". These are the multiple explanations behind why we should be thankful that Mondays exist.

Think about it. Monday rolls around and the weekend is over. Well, what does that mean? Aside from the fact that reality welcomes us back with mandatory obligations, we also have had the ability to completely ignore them for the past couple of days, giving way for the opportunity of rest and relaxation or even a simple break from our usual day-to-day lives. Either way, Monday should be a refreshing "reset" to our energy level, unlike a day that is located in the middle of the week, such as Thursday, when people are drained from the life they are living on lack of sleep. Unless you have experienced one wild weekend--no judgment, we all have those on occasion--most likely sleep has been your friend and the tremendous amount you've received has left you ready to take on the new week by the time Monday arrives.

Which happens to connect with the next amazing aspect of Mondays: it starts a new week! It's almost like a new beginning; does last week contain fantastic moments? Great, now they can be saved as cherished memories. Was last week terrible or boring? Also great because it is in the past, and now that Monday has taken over, anything bad that happened is not as prominent and the good still stands in our thoughts. Then, Monday creates the chances for a transformation of any poorness of the previous week, or being involved in joyous moments never experienced before.

Lastly, Mondays come with an element of surprise. You never really know what a new week is going to bring. The variety of possibilities is quite exciting! There is something about not knowing what might happen that awakens the curiosity in us. This can spark an anticipation that will carry us through to the end of the week.

Needless to say, Mondays are spectacular and should be appreciated.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
