Dear Mom,

There is not a day that I am not grateful for you. However, there are plenty of days that I take for granted the unconditional and selfless love you have showered me with all these years. Every pep rally, dance recital, or competition, you were always the front line of my support system. Even during everyday life, you would go out of your way to make my life easier or to cheer me up when I was down.

There is a reason that you are the first person I call after every success and especially after every failure. You constantly remind me of my strength and capability to achieve whatever I set my mind to. You had faith in me during times when I did not have faith in myself. Your constant encouragement helped me become the person I am today.

I have watched you be a supermom my whole life. You balance family, friends, and work life like a pro. Even when you had some down moments, you always seemed like you had everything together. I forget that you are human too and need (deserve) a pep talk every once in a while.

So, here are a few reminders of why you are an amazing person and mother.

1. You are beautiful inside and out.

These are words you live by in every area of your life. You do whatever it takes to get the job done. Watching you put in extra hours and striving for perfection taught me the importance of going the extra mile.

2. You are an example of a true friend.

People come to you for advice and lean on you because of your unwavering loyalty. No matter the situation, you constantly have your friends' backs.

3. You are genuine to others and to yourself.

I am honestly jealous of your ability to not care what other people think. You stick to your morals and don't let any person sway you from your true self.

4. You are a brilliant problem solver.

Whether it is at work or helping me figure out how to properly store my Eggos, no challenge is too big (or small) for you.

5. In a world where many are OK with “settling” you attack each and every day.

You showed me that there is always room for improvements and to learn from every mistake. "Average" is not a word in your vocabulary book.

6. You may be small, but you are mighty.

From standing up for yourself to breaking up a fight in order to protect your friend's child, you are one fierce lady. I am glad to have you in my corner.

7. You leave a positive impact on everyone’s life.

I don't know a person who says they were better off not knowing you. You push people to be the best they can be and help them reach their goals.

8. You are the best role model.

You managed to make a name for yourself in your career while taking care of the family. You showed me how to be a strong woman and fight for my dreams. Most importantly, you showed me the importance of being my true self.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
