Halloween in New York City was certainly unlike anything I had ever expected. The drunk city dwellers in costume harass pedestrians for candy, and close by there is the formal suburban family with two young kids confused as to why there are men walking by in heels and lingerie. Not to mention the most mind-blowing parties you could ever imagine. These things collectively make up what the true spirit of Halloween is, more or less. My group, however, fell somewhere in between these lines, as we were drunk but contained and in desperate need to find the best party of the night.
The day started at around four in the afternoon for us when the drinking and dancing commenced at a house party not too far from our dorms. We all arrived eager and hungry, but the only thing we felt when the door opened was heat. A mass of people filled the small apartment, which retaliated by drowning us in high temperatures and humidity. We made sure to take advantage of the good food, music, and drinks before leaving shortly after. The next thing on the agenda was to find an amazing party, which normally wouldn’t be too hard, but when a party is being thrown at almost every corner, you want to make certain that you attend the best one. Nevertheless, with no time to waste we rolled our dice and decided on the MOMA PS1 Halloween party in Queens.
The journey to the event was a surprisingly smooth one. We simply jumped on the express five train from Union Square to Grand Central, then we transferred onto the seven train towards Queens for a total of three stops. Unfortunately, the rest of the trip did not go so smoothly. As soon as we exited the subway station, we walked towards the venue in the what felt like freezing weather, and we waited in a one-and-a-half-hour line outside to buy tickets. Not to mention the mortician costume I was wearing consisted of a thin robe which barely covered my chest and a pair of black pants with boots. Needless to say, I was not comfortable. This grueling line left all of us with more goosebumps than we thought we could have, but in the end we were rewarded.
MOMA PS1 lived up to its reputation in more ways than one. As we walked in, I took notice of just about everything from the flamboyant costumes to the vibrant décor and atmosphere. Honestly, my friends and I had never seen anything like it. It was like stepping into a Club Kid party, but with a lot more diversity in the costumes and a lot more movement. What truly made this party spectacular was the music and dancing, which would have given any parent a heart attack. The art punk/pop/dance/techno music set the scene for an unparalleled night. We found ourselves dancing for hours on end, not caring about the people bumping into us or the sweat dripping off our foreheads. Any doubts or regrets we had were long gone now, and we knew this was the place to be for Halloween 2015. We needed no candy, no money, no liquor or drugs, because in this place and time we felt most alive.
