My Mom Is The Best

She is the greatest at so many things.

My Mom Is The Best
Raven Stikes

1. Her Honesty

My mom is one of the most honest people I know and she isn't afraid to tell anyone the truth whether it hurts their feelings or not. She has always told my siblings and I the truth no matter how much we didn't want to hear it.

2. Her Humor

If there is one thing that my mom has it has to be humor. My mom has a ball-cracking jokes on my siblings, my dad, herself or me. My mom doesn't care where she is she will always find an opportunity to crack some type of joke on someone.

3. Her Perseverance

This one is huge because without my mom I don't think my siblings or I would have ever gotten any of those State projects done had she not helped or stayed up late to finish it for us because we mentioned it last minute.

4. Her Sarcasm

If there is one thing I mastered from my mom it is most definitely sarcasm. If you ask a irrelevant question it's more than likely to get a sarcastic answer from my mom no matter how much you wish she would take you serious.

5. Her Sacrifices

My mom has always sacrificed many things for my siblings and I happiness. Whether it be her sleep or her sanity. Because if there is one thing she disliked most, it would the times I did cheerleading.

6. Her Goofiness

My mom is extremely goofy and she has no problem admitting to it. She always knows just what to do to earn a laugh from me. I could be having a terrible day and my mom always finds a way to make me laugh whether it be messing with my siblings or cracking jokes on them.

7. Her Home-cooked Meals

Moving away to college has came with this huge perk. I never knew how much I missed her cooking than I did leaving for school. I cherish all the times she has sent me to school with her homemade sausage gravy. Not to mention coming home for break and getting to choose what we eat for dinner.

8. Her Determination

My mom has taught me many things but nothing has stuck to me more than watching her set her mind to something and never stray from it until she achieved it. Her determination sometimes can be fun to watch especially when she makes it her goal to bug my siblings and see how long it'll take for them to break and start to get irritated.

9. Her Obsession With "The Walking Dead"

It started out with my brother watching on Netflix then it turned into it becoming her show she enjoyed. The day she finished that show was fun to watch because she was determined to catch up so that she could watch the current season.

10. Her Open-Door Policy

If there is one thing I learned, it's that no matter who you were and no matter what you did you could come to my mom. My mom has always welcomed our friends to our home and treated them as one of her own and that even meant loving them like they were one of us. All of my friends have always told me that my mom was never just my mom; she was also their mom.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
